Just sprayed the pad and hood. Got three coats out of one can. Letting the
adhesive tack up for 10-15 minutes.

enough to get a new pad to stay up, I had this on the old 300D.  Terrible job.

Get the hood as clean as you can, then fit the pad dry.  Get it all tucked in
and properly positioned, then use a broom or something similar roughly in the
middle to hold the bottom up and pull the top half down.  Make sure the bottom
half stays where you want it.

Spray a very light coat of the adhesive on the hood and on the pad.  Repeat
twice, very light coats.  You don't want a thick gummy layer, it is much more
likely to fail.  Just enough to coat all the edges of the cells on the pad.

Let it dry until tacky, and carefully press the top half onto the hood,
starting at the broom or whatever you used.  With a bit of care, it will all
fit exactly the way you had it before applying adhesive.

Repeat for the bottom half.

With the correct amount of adhesive, it will stay up until it falls apart, both
of mine have.

The key is light but complete coats of adhesive.  One can should do two hoods
if that gives you an idea of how much to use.  More is NOT better in this case.

I pretty much concur with Peter, but I like to spray/apply adhesive to the
parts separately. I mask off the hood and cover the engine compartment with an
old sheet. I have a roll of butcher’s paper I put down on the floor where I
place the pad and spray it. Once everything sets up (five minutes or more,
depending on temperature and humidity) I get the pad positioned and just
lightly tap it in a couple of places to stick. Once I’m satisfied that it’s in
position, I press it into place by hand, then go over it in great detail with a
brayer (hard rubber or wooden roller) to make sure it adheres properly.

I’ve never had one come off - yet.

I’ll have pictures of the process on the blog tonight.

Just bought two cans of this:

https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/3m-super-trim-adhesive-yellow-19-oz-08090/7160016-P?searchTerm=trim+adhesive

Only stuff I’ll use. As with anything using adhesives or paint, proper surface
prep is critical to it performing properly. As my hood has been scraped of all
loose gunk, I’ll wipe it down prior to adhesive application with a liberal
amount of 3M Adhesive Remover.

If you have Advance Auto in the area, they’re the cheapest - you can use a
promo code to get 20% off. It ends up being even cheaper than the island of
large women.

I’ll have pictures of the process up on the blog later today or tonight.

Re: [MBZ] Hood Pads

Make sure you use the high temp stuff, not the regular! I think the
high temp is product 8090, not all stores have it.

If you use the regular adhesive, it will fall off in a couple months.
You should be able to get almost two pads glued in with one can, a
light mist completely covering the metal and the pad are quite enough
-- I did mine in three passes, very light coats. You will not see it
on the pad, it's open cell foam and the adhesive will vanish. Just
spray enough that it will stick to your hand. Allow to dry for a
minute or two, until it's quite tacky, and stick on. Pre-position the
pad and hold top or bottom in place while doing the other half works
best.

 a couple months.
You should be able to get almost two pads glued in
 with one can, a
light mist completely covering the metal and the pad
 are quite enough
-- I did mine in three passes, very light coats.
 You will not see it
on the pad, it's open cell foam and the adhesive
 will vanish. Just
spray enough that it will stick to your hand. Allow
 to dry for a
minute or two, until it's quite tacky, and stick on.
  Pre-position the
pad and hold top or bottom in place while doing the
 other half works
 best.

8089 is the regular adhesive, and 8090 is the heavy

I've heard of using Liquid Nails to hold the hood pad on (on this list, in
fact ...).

Liquid Nails is the way to go. It's cheap and gives time to place the pad.

Liquid nails is both overkill and a HUGE PITA to clean up next time.
The original wasn't held up by very much adhesive at all -- just use
the heavy duty/high temperature 3M 8090 and it will stick forever.
Mine is going on three years now, looks like the day I stuck it up
there.

Took me about four hours to scrape all the crap off from the previous
if some is good an inch or two is much better installation.

I glued my replacement hood pad on with Gorilla Glue. Still holding
great almost 4 years later.

Make sure you use the high temp stuff, not the regular! I think the

[MBZ] Hood Pads

2007-09-07 Thread LarryT
Howdy -
I need a hood pad for the '78 240D and noticed Rusty sells one with, and
one without a heatshield.

Living in Va I'm not sure I need the heatshield. While I don't mind
extra protection, if the heatshield is only needed when traversing Africa in
high summer, it might be a waste to put it on mine. But, if it will make
the AC work easier I'll go for it -

Right. I don't think the foam would last very long on a turbo car
without the foil shield if you keep up with your Italian tuneups.

The heat shield isn't for keeping the sun out, it's for keeping the heat
under the hood and the paint on your hood.
It would be worth a few extra bucks for a little extra protection in the
long run.

Isn't it mostly for the extra turbo heat? Might be a bit mute if he's got a
