Re: [MBZ] How bad would you have to overhear at 617 that would cause it not to start?

After dark, heavy pre-Christmas traffic. I had to leave it running another
minute or so to get safely off the highway. It ran for another 4 months or so
before it really manifested a problem.

I had the lower radiator hose clamp break while in the fast lane in heavy
traffic at 75mph. My first hint something was wrong was when the car smelled
hot. I looked and the gauge was pegged.I got us off the highway quick but the
damage was done...That was a 240D, apparently Dimitri's buddy still drives it
with the thermostat forced open...

2017-11-24 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Kaleb,

Just some xtra info. My mechanic once told me that if a diesel doesn't
start and you continue trying to crank it that you will "wash down the cylinder
walls" and lose compression and it will never start. He said the fix is to
remove the glow plugs, pour oil into each cylinder, replace the glow plugs and
let it sit overnight. He said it will now regain enough compression to start,
assuming the glow plugs and fuel are ok and battery can spin fast enough. It
would seem a simple try before doing a lot of work to include replacing the
engine.

Just a suggestion.

Best Wishes and hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving,

Roger

The car seems pretty nice. Worth dropping an engine in at that price?

Hot enough to loose spring tension on the piston rings and lose compression.

As a low compression diesel it won't start Likely also lost camber
on the pistons so they will slap when they go up and down... for a while...
until the piston skirt breaks off and that shrapnel destroys the rest of
the engine...

Cause of over-heat? Fix that replace engine body and interior look
as good as my one owner 300D with 102,000 mi... Should go for another
million miles... long as the "air blows cold" right?
