Re: [MBZ] How safe is buying a car without a title and what can be done to get it titled!?
The first thing I would do is get the full VIN and stop by your local police station. Let them know you are looking at the vehicle but the seller claims the title was "lost" and you want to make sure it isn't reported stolen before you buy it. I am pretty sure that is the rule here but would want to double-check before someone depended on it. Also, I'd need to be reimbursed for fees / taxes / etc. (not too high). On 12/25/05, Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] How safe is buying a car without a title and what can be done to get it titled!?
Depends on what state you are in. It could be a hassle but not undoable. Here in OK there is a procedure to go thru on cars with no title. Basically what you are doing is putting a storage lien on it or repair lien or whatever. You get some paperwork from the state DMV, fill it out, you have to get a record of the last known owner and send them a certified letter, publish the date and time of your "auction", and also post it in another public place. Think it has to be posted in 3 different placed. Anyways, after you do this, you send proof of mailing, proof of public posting, then proof that you sold the car at auction (to yourself) in and you get a title in your name. OR, some states will give you a title from just a bill of sale. In OK if you buy a car from a state that doesnt give titles on cars over a certain age, you can get a OK title just from a bill of sale. Then there are title companies. One is broadway title I think, they charge something like $350 to get a title. They have a website I do believe. kayoooh @ gmail wrote: Merry Christmas Listers, can any of you tell me what is involved in titling a car bought with a bill of sale!? Any pitfalls to look out for? Re: [MBZ] How safe is buying a car without a title and what can be done to get it titled!?
can any of you tell me what is involved in titling a car bought with a bill of sale!? Any pitfalls to look out for? It's state-dependent. In WA the process for seizing a title involves registered mail to the PO of record. I'm unsure about a car that was titled in a different state. But your friendly DMV worker will be glad to explain it all to you. In WA a car can be licensed sans title, so you can be on the road while it all clears up. (Or not.) -- Jim

Depends on where you live. There are several of us out here who live in states that require only a bill of sale. Worst case scenerio, you get one of us to title the car in our state then sign the title over to you.
