Now try some Wesleys Bleachwhite and that should get the rest of it. Dawn
should get all of it up, but you might need to leave it overnight because its a
really old stain. Just scrub it into the stain and let it sit.

Used Dawn sofar with really hot water, let it sit, scrubbed with a brush.
Got about 80% out so far.

Now to try some of the other suggestions. Have some coke in the fridge,
Maybe I'll try that tonight.

Re: [MBZ] How to remove diesel oil from concrete?

2007-07-30 Thread Loren Faeth
Mark off the garage floor in 12" squares, then paint alternate
squares with used Diesel oil, the alternate ones with white epoxy
paint. After a week of drying time, soak up any excess motor oil and
then you have a garage floor that looks like those on the car tv
shows. Add a couple of chrome barstools and a neon sign, studebaker preferred.

Or, take your airchisel and rough up the whole floor, then mix bridge
deck concrete mix, (heavy latex and cement) and trowel it over the
floor. This will also take care of any pitting or spalling you may have.

you can take solvents and soap and a pressure washer and get most of it off.

Muriatic acid is used to ETCH concrete..Not good at all for the
floor as if it doesn't actually remove some of the concrete it will soften
the top surface enough that a floor jack will turn it to powder.

Try the kitty litter and wood block trickIt works. One of my friends
father was very anal about the floor in his shop but refused to have it
painted(slippery with oil on it painted) so he used to make AJ grind the

I've had pretty good luck with the "Oil Dry" type absorbent. It's the same
as kitty litter, but sold as a car part instead of a pet supply wiith smell
crystals. Like suggested for using kitty litter, it works better if you
kind of grind or rub it in and let it set for a few weeks. I suspect any
calcined mineral like diatomaceous earth (kitty litter), portland cemet,
kilned lime etc will probably suck oil out of concrete. YMMV.

Honestly, if your garage floor is coated then clean-up should not be a
problem. You can wipe up the oil then scrub the floor with any good
detergent.

The problem comes from when it's not, like my driveway. In this case, some
of the oil actually soaks into the concrete, carrying the black soot in with
it. I've tried everything from Cascade, Coca-Cola, Muriatic acid and a
pressure washer. Of all of these, the acid was the worse because the acid
actually etched away some of the driveway surface. And yes, there was still
a stain underneath.

So, I just watch the stains slowly fade over the years & I ignore the
neighbors' complaints..

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet

Take a smal pile of speedy dry and a piece of 2x4 about 6 inches long or
so and use the wide flat side to grind the speedy dry into the stain like
you were rubbing out paint except alot harder, keep at it and it will
eventually all come out. You should end up with a very fine powder like
flour if you are doing it right.

When I came back found a small puddle of oil about 4 X 6 under the front
left fender. (It's a leaking oil cooler hose which is getting fixed
tomorrow) Anyway, what's the best way to get rid of that big black oil
blotch left in the concrete in my garage?

Anglelo,

Regular clay based kitty litter will lift it out. You can grind the stuff
into the concrete with the heel of an old shoe. Leave a fresh bunch for a
couple days. The powder residue remaining will match the concrete pretty
close.

Brake cleaner is the choice for oil stains while working and it is
fresh, but I like the Coke for passive cleaning on cement

Coca Cola and sun shine works like a charm. No idea how it does it,
but a few days later, no oil on the floor.

Tom,

Nice.. Heck, for that matter, I could dump my topsider from the
last oil change on the floor and spread it around.

Glad to see you've got a sense of humor.

Seriously, some diesel oil stains on my driveway are over 15 years old.
They fade with time but they never go away.

Simple green does a pretty decent job. Let it soak for a while keep it
wet then hose it off.

Refrigerator coil cleaner does a bang up job ( nasty stuff, caustic soda )

Re: [MBZ] How to remove diesel oil from concrete?

2007-07-28 Thread Wonko the Sane
The more important question is this: why would you want to remove it?

Let's face it, any dog worth having marks its spot from time to time. Or, in
the case of my household, any good cat ...

I'd say keep the spot intact as a conversation piece. And when anyone asks
what the stain is on the garage floor, just reply, "I own a diesel Benz and
you don't, so you wouldn't understand."

A friend says he uses starting ether and rags or paper towels on concrete
with good results. I saw him use starting ether to get grease out of the
pants leg of a good pair of pants.  Hard to believe, but he got it all out;
pants like new again.
