Re: [MBZ] I found an 82 300CD
Michael, As afar as I know is still for sale-he's been trying for a couple years-started at 3500. I think you saw most of what we know- 3 of us NE listers have looked at it or drove it. Somewhere on one of my half dead computers, I have pictures that John Peterson took. E-mail me off list and I'll end them to you and the guy's phone number. He doesn't really know anything about the car-he is selling it for his wife. Did you see Curt Ryamond's posts as well as mine about what we found? I really wanted the car-but not practical for me as I don't have a garage, time to work on it, etc. What are you driving now? The coupes are nice looking cars, and relatively rare in general. Looking at the picture it seems to be similar looking to my recent acquisition. So, is it worth $450 more than the 240D I just bought? Probably, but either car might be a money pit in disguise. Still, that's the big gamble with these things! (Cars, I mean.) Is a coupe the right car for you? A good question to have the answer to. No, if back seat activity is important. Not the best family car, in other words. Condition, condition, condition. If the thing will clean up acceptably, _everything_ else can be dealt with fairly cheaply DIY, with patience and care. -- Jim

Kevin, depends; how much is he willing to pay you to take it? ;-) about 8K turbo CDs were brought to the USA according to the figures i've seen. whether or not that's rare in your book is relative. with all the things you list being out of wack it would appear that this vehicle wasn't likely to have been owned by someone who cared for it and took care of it as (i would think) it should have been. clues: why would someone *not* fix the vacuum issue? that means that the front seats probably don't even lock down in place; a feature unique to the coupes. that's a potential safety issue to me; and indicative of that owners priorities,... why would someone *not* fix the AC? even if the issue was only that it needed to be refilled and they didn't even do that, without freon the seals in the system will dry out and become brittle, potentially necessitating a complete rebuild of the entire system before it will work properly and hold a charge again. this also means (amongst other things) that the defroster dry air and won't work properly; probably not something you'd consider optional in your area. price out the repairs on that rebuild, and you'll run away screaming. transmission has a little slipping? could be simple, could be much worse. *most* gages work? which ones don't, and why not? if you have many thousands of dollars set aside to repair a vehicle that has an absolutely perfect chassis but needs lots of other help, it *might* be worth taking, but this doesn't sound likely. bottom line, this doesn't sound like a car somebody cared about the way i'd want someone to if i was thinking of buying from them. cheers! e I'm thinking of checking this one out. Re: [MBZ] I found an 82 300CD
Question: Is the auto tranny an issue in the Coupes specifically? (not sure why it'd be peculiar to the Coupe, - just asking). Or is this common in a lot of auto tranny 300Ds? The 300 CD we looked at in AZ had shifting issues too. He said it was slipping, but the dealer fixed it. Later, he neglected to mention the dealer part. When we rode in it, it shifted very hard, seemed it wanted to chirp the tires. I did notice, though, that it was something like a pint - a quart low on ATF. But he said it had had shifting issues for some time. Brian 83 240D _ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! Now that you put it that way, he would have to pay me around $3K to take it off his hands! I do like the look of the 300CD's, but not the back seat room. Now that I have a crew cab pickup which is big enough to hold everyone and the doggies, it would be just a fun car anyway. Kevin in Hillsboro Oregon 1973 220D parting out, but no bites yet
Re: [MBZ] I found an 82 300CD
Don't know what the asking price is, but it better be under $1 K due to the many issues that need attenditon. I'd bet money that it's oil cooler line or oil filter canister gasket related. Couldn't it also be the turbo drain tube seals? losing a qt every 40 miles would indicate that it's high pressure oil loss or maybe even burning it although oil CONSUMPTION wasn't mentioned. I figured it was the same tranny. So I guess the question becomes: Are the auto trannies in Mercedes diesels (particularly early - mid-eighties) often a problem? Do they not live up to the legendary longevity of the engines? I'm glad that I have a manual tranny, but the wife is enamored with the Coupes since we checked that one out. True, but how much oil will leak out of the turbo return line after the engine is off. Re: [MBZ] I found an 82 300CD
When we rode in it, it shifted very hard, seemed it wanted to chirp the tires. I did notice, though, that it was something like a pint - a quart low on ATF. But he said it had had shifting issues for some time. It was probably flaring and they disconnected the vacuum line altogether resulting in its hardest shifting. (Which is none too hard in the Chicken Wagon where we've also done this.) -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] I found an 82 300CD
Good info. I'd wondered about the auto trannies in these autos. Didn't know if they were good or bad or somewhere inbetween. This is the main reason I love the peace of mind of a standard. My 727 Torqueflite auto, though, is known in the biz as bulletproof. Why am I getting rid of that car again? The seller of the CD we test drove claimed it was a Borg Warner transmission and tough as nails. But he said a lot of stuff - he is a jewelry and fine metals salesman. Well, he could be a great guy, I'm just saying he's a salesman, so he was giving quite a pitch. They're good, certainly when compared to the ones in some mommyvans I've heard of. It's just when compared to the engines, which are _great_, they don't fare quite so well. -- Jim

I also looked at that CD but didn't drive it. Based on what Dwight says and I saw for $800 it'd be a pretty good car, for any more the deal declines rapidly. I think the light blue is one of the nicest colors I've ever seen on a car, thats what my wagon was and I was sorely tempted with that CD. -Curt Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2006 08:06:51 -0500 From: Dwight E. Fellow lister John Peterson and I found one-a good 15 foot car-but had window seal issues, trany had shift and slip issues-some of the slip may hve been due to dragging brakes. Could be had for about 1500. It is stored in a heated garage. Seems to be not quite pristine ecnogh for a collector and too many mechanical questions to be a cheap dialy driver. But it is a sweet looking car-baby blue,no visible rust from 10'. Could be a good project though for the right owner. Nice to be back on the list.
