Re: [MBZ] I leave town and people get a brilliant idea to buy the kid a car while I am gone

2020-02-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
If he ever tosses in the towel on it I’ll take it off his hands and see if I
can sort it out. It’s in pretty good shape and I’ve got a fair number of parts
ready to go on it that would make it nice and better than it currently is. Son
has all of this available to him but won’t lift a finger, so it’s on him if it
pukes.

The Cougar was, IMO (I realize others strongly disagree) a very attractive car,
from the rear at least.

But if the Million Dollar Seller he's married to can get $1200 for one that has
200k on the odo and is on the verge of imploding, he really needs to give her

When I left home for college, I really had no clue at all about the
responsibility that comes with owning a car. After several years of
struggling with awful cars, some of which were unsafe to drive, most of
which I drove way too fast and hard, eventually I figured it out.

Dan I think you're doing the right thing, let him struggle and figure it
out, either he will or he won't.

Agreed. I am always keeping half an eye out for such cars. Camry, Altima,
Civic, in no particular order. When the E320 CDI grenades, there is no doubt it
will be my responsibility to deal with the fallout and produce a resolution. I
kick myself for not doing it the last round.

$400 (minus the new battery) profit?

And all it took was you looking at it and saying "It's junk!"

That's a pretty good flip, I'd say. But maybe don't say too much

rust. It had a few issues such as the turn signals quit working and the
ignition switch got stuck in the on position. I fixed ignition and pulled
the fuse for the blinkers and put it back in and they started working.
They evidentially quit working so I was at a loss as to what the issue
was. I do not work on these sort of cars so I had no interest in it. Told
him to take it somewhere. He also just had the brakes done. New muffler
 was installed also.

I guess somehow the idea came about while I was gone for my father to buy
him another car. Somebody on Fakebook my wife knew was selling this 02
Mercury Cougar for $1200 so they went to look at it Monday. The car has
209k miles. So as I am out of town she is texting me and come to find out
the battery is completely dead. My father went down and bought a battery
for it to see if it would start. I let her know it sounded like a $400 car
if that. She then messages me saying it cranks and wont start and wants to
know what the cause could be. Could be many things. So they got it started
finally and next thing I know they paid $800 for it. They never even drove
 the car.

Wife later tells me it shakes real bad on the highway and wants me to look
at it when I get home. I told her the tires probably need to be balanced.
So the kid goes out and starts it up as I am heading out the door. I hear
a loud rattle as it starts like lifters, timing chain, something. Not
really sure because I was not there when he started it. I drove the car
down the road and holy hell I don't think I have ever been in a car that
shook so bad. It was all over the road and felt like the front end was
about the fall out from under it. Backing up a bit in the story, Right
after the kid first started it to back it into the driveway I checked the
oil, coolant etc. Only had run for 30 seconds so cold engine. When I
pulled the coolant cap it had some pressure in the system after sitting
for however long it was before I got back home.

Anyway, got it back home, all 4 tires are bald and dry rotted, I can smell
oil burning, has some sort of consistent knock from the engine, sort of a
dull knock that changes with RPM. I listened with a long screwdriver
thinking it might be top end but I could never really find it, so I
suspect its coming from the bottom end. It is PRETTY obvious and I would
think anyone with half a brain would have noticed. I looked under the car
and there was a pretty good oil leak going on from the front seal it
appeared. Had a spot of oil on the driveway about the side of 2-3 silver
dollars after it sat there running about 5 minutes. Lots of grease around
the ball joints and CV shafts. I could not really tell for sure if the
boots were split or what but I suspect they could be. Has some sort of
weird vacuum sounding noise coming from the brake booster I believe.
Pulled the coolant cap and it looked good but did have a little steam
coming out. Not really sure if it is normal or not. Had some movement in
the overflow tank when revved, I do not think it was bubbling but could be
a leaking headgasket with the pressure in the system. Not sure.

[MBZ] I leave town and people get a brilliant idea to buy the kid a car while I am gone

2020-02-15 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
So the 24 year old kid that lives at home finally got a job at a fast
food place and his grandmothers boyfriend gave him a 87 Buick Century
that his 80 year mother drove.  It only had 80k miles but is ugly
because it has rust.  It had a few issues such as the turn signals quit
working and the ignition switch got stuck in the on position.  I fixed
ignition and pulled the fuse for the blinkers and put it back in and
they started working.  They evidentially quit working so I was at a loss
as to what the issue was.  I do not work on these sort of cars so I had
no interest in it.  Told him to take it somewhere.  He also just had the
brakes done.  New muffler was installed also.

I guess somehow the idea came about while I was gone for my father to
buy him another car.  Somebody on Fakebook my wife knew was selling this
02 Mercury Cougar for $1200 so they went to look at it Monday.  The car
has 209k miles.  So as I am out of town she is texting me and come to
find out the battery is completely dead.  My father went down and bought
a battery for it to see if it would start.  I let her know it sounded
like a $400 car if that.  She then messages me saying it cranks and wont
start and wants to know what the cause could be.  Could be many things.
So they got it started finally and next thing I know they paid $800 for
it.  They never even drove the car.

Wife later tells me it shakes real bad on the highway and wants me to
look at it when I get home.  I told her the tires probably need to be
balanced.  So the kid goes out and starts it up as I am heading out the
door. I hear a loud rattle as it starts like lifters, timing chain,
something. Not really sure because I was not there when he started it.
I drove the car down the road and holy hell I don't think I have ever
been in a car that shook so bad.  It was all over the road and felt like
the front end was about the fall out from under it.  Backing up a bit in
the story, Right after the kid first started it to back it into the
driveway I checked the oil, coolant etc. Only had run for 30 seconds so
cold engine. When I pulled the coolant cap it had some pressure in the
system after sitting for however long it was before I got back home.

Anyway, got it back home, all 4 tires are bald and dry rotted, I can
smell oil burning, has some sort of consistent knock from the engine,
sort of a dull knock that changes with RPM.  I listened with a long
screwdriver thinking it might be top end but I could never really find
it, so I suspect its coming from the bottom end.  It is PRETTY obvious
and I would think anyone with half a brain would have noticed.  I looked
under the car and there was a pretty good oil leak going on from the
front seal it appeared. Had a spot of oil on the driveway about the side
of 2-3 silver dollars after it sat there running about 5 minutes.  Lots
of grease around the ball joints and CV shafts.  I could not really tell
for sure if the boots were split or what but I suspect they could be.
Has some sort of weird vacuum sounding noise coming from the brake
booster I believe.  Pulled the coolant cap and it looked good but did
have a little steam coming out.  Not really sure if it is normal or
not.  Had some movement in the overflow tank when revved, I do not think
it was bubbling but could be a leaking headgasket with the pressure in
the system.  Not sure.
