You're probably right, BUT, Mercedes did try several Wankel diesel engines
in their test bed C-111. Since the Wankel was tried just before they tried
the diesels in the C-111, a Mercedes diesel Wankel might bolt right up to a
transmission of that era. If so, someone might have gotten hold of an MB
diesel Wankel engine and put it in this car without too much major
 adaptation.
He claims to have replaced seals and main bearings. That is about all
there is to replace in a Wankel and main bearings are seldom replaced in a
standard Mercedes diesel without replacing other engine parts, so he seems
to know something about Wankel engines.
If it's not a Wankel, why is the guy saying it is when he could more
easily sell the car with a standard diesel at that price?

Kaleb ought to go out there and buy it if it is a Wankel.
It would be an interesting addition to his fleet.

Here's a description of MBs Wankel experiments:

The *C111* was a series of experimental automobiles
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile produced by Mercedes-Benz
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz in the 1960s and 1970s. The
company was experimenting with new engine technologies, including Wankel
 engines http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wankel_engine, Diesel engines
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_engine, and turbochargers
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbocharger, and used the basic C111
platform as a testbed. Other experimental features included gullwing doors
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gullwing_door and a luxurious interior with
leather trim and air conditioning http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
 Air_conditioning.

The first version of the C111 http://emercedesbenz.com/
 Jul08/31_001312_eMercedesBenz_Feature_A_Look_Back_At_The_
Mercedes_Benz_C_111_Research_Vehicle.html was completed in 1969. It used
a fiberglass http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiberglass body shell and had
 a three-rotor http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_M950F direct
 fuel injected http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_injected Wankel engine
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wankel_engine (code named M950F
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_M950F) mounted in the middle
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MR_layout. The next C111 appeared in 1970.
 It used a four-rotor engine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Mercedes-Benz_M950F producing 370 hp (275 kW). The car could reportedly
 hit 290 km/h (180 mph).

The company decided not to adopt the Wankel engine and turned to Diesel
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_engine experiments for the second
and third C111. The C111-IID produced 190 horsepower (140 kW) and was based
 on the 240D 3.0 W115 model OM617 engine. The C111-III was powered by a 230
 horsepower (170 kW) @ 4,500rpm straight-5 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Straight-5 OM617 turbodiesel which broke nine diesel and gas speed
 records. With more aerodynamic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerodynamic
bodywork that gave it an air drag coefficient
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_coefficient of .191^[/citation needed
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed/] , the C111
 eventually hit 200 mph (322 km/h) at Nardò http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
 Nard%C3%B2_Ring in 1978, and averaged 14.7mpg@ 316 km/h (195.4 mph) over
 a 12 hour cruise. A later 500 hp (372 kW) 4.8 L twin KKK-turbocharged V8
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V8_engine version set another record, with
an average lap-speed of 403.78 km/h (250.958 mph). It was achieved by Dr.
Hans Leibold in 1 minute, 56.67 seconds on May 5, 1979.

I don't believe a 20:1 compression ratio is actually possible in a
Wankel. Just not enough space to move the rotor that much.

Seal problems were more or less fixed by the end of the life of the
Mazda RX series, the last ones to use a rotary engine in the US, but
emissions were terrible as was milage. A real hoot to drive, though.
My old college roommate had one for a brief period, until the seal
wear got so bad you had to pour gasoline down the intake to get it to
start.

My buddy Hans says the only real problem with them was they only work
well about 8,000 rpm and they are just geared way too low, but I
think it's another brilliant idea that died in engineering
complications.
