Based on what I’m hearing, my mileage isn’t outside of the mean.
I haven’t put my foot into it at high speed, but before swapping injectors I
could get visible smoke from a stop with my foot to the
Very quiet and low milage makes me think late injection timing! Any
smoke under load at high speed?

I figured that was the case. I was a little disappointed when I drove it home
from Little Rock, as I expected to do better mileage-wise, but it was far
better than a W140.
I keep very detailed records on my cars, and this one has consistently averaged
around 21.5 mpg since I got it in

The gunk is coked oil and soot from the EGR. Synthetic oil does not
coke like dino oil, so if the owner has been using synthetic, the
intake will be clean.

350SDL doesn't do as well for fuel economy. I remember when my father had
one, the best he could do was mid 20s most of the time, and he drove all
highway. He had a 300SDL before that that was better.
I get about 22mpg in my 350SDL. Lots of highway, but usually at high
speed, and I drive with
There wasn't a lot of goo in mine, surprisingly. I was expecting a lot more,
I'm not sure why, as my car doesn't use oil or smoke under load significantly.
I capped off the EGR a while ago, too.

A pox upon you for showing that. Now I am going to obsess about needing to
clean the intake of all the black ooze in Polei. I have no idea if there is
ooze, but your photos make me think there is now huge amounts of goo in there

Now you have me wondering…. I’ll look tomorrow to be sure. I know the linkage
for the cruise control actuator was plastic on both ends, as I was surprised
when I saw it. I don’t recall the throttle linkage being plastic.
FWIW, I checked the EPC just briefly and on the OM603 they only sell the
Our _typical_ mileage on the SDL was 27. Best-ever was, IIRC, 32. 30 or
over was rare.

I think (IIRC) that we got a bit over 26 on the highway with the '87 SDL.

That pressure sender - a tube or electrical? Electrical would be the
over-boost signal. Tube would be pressure signal to the ALDA which increases
fuel with increased air from turbo.

Some additional observations:
Insides of manifold and crossover pipe were oily, but there wasn’t much
buildup. I didn’t see a lot of value in taking the time to clean them out. I
recently capped off the vacuum line to the EGR, too, but I don’t see that
affecting the manifold significantly.
Thanks, all!
