No. But it is new, with the factory warranty. I look at it this way. If he was
trying to pawn it, they will give him 1/3 of that. I would offer maybe 1/2-2/3

Yeah, I know. I think some guy in Topeka or somewhere in Kansas owns it. I
check in on it occasionally.

Since Dad was a full IFR rated instructor I usually got to fly left seat. I

Except, the airplane costs more..
Over the past 40 years, I've seen many such disasters in the flying

My 126+603 is a pleasure to drive, but more complex and harder to work
on than a 616/617. I find it less enjoyable to look at and less
enjoyable to work on than my 617, as evidenced by the 617 having about
5x the number of miles in the equivalent ownership period - but when
it is working it is a very comfortable car to ride and drive.

Here's a 2.5, your fellow is high IMO.
http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/3359129202.html , $3750

Etc.:
http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/3352955623.html , $2500
http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/3350628926.html , $2750
http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/3338280175.html , $6000, believe it
comes with a trunk full of crack

Raleigh CL often has a lot of 124s, and the airport is pretty central
to the CL area. Southwest one-way service is cheap, as I recall, you
could ship Mao at both ends for less than the cost of the Boston car.
Some number of carpetbagger imports so you have to watch for rust, but
you either have serious rust or just a little where the paint has
corroded - not a lot of middle ground. Atlanta is also a good place
to watch, not sure about pricing there.

Best,
-Tim

It does not have any soul. Maybe in fifteen years it could get a little soul,
but now it is a tired car that you are going to dump a bucket of cash into.
Will need a fuel system rebuild and cleaning. Bushings and suspension are
aging out if original. IF it lived inside, then you may not hit rust too
badly, but even my California car that lived here for the past decade or so is
getting the paint failure and incipient rust. All the glass seals are going to
want renewal, ABS and glow relays are going to need replacement, as will the
SRS.

I had not looked at the listing before. Showing only on photo is not
encouraging. I would want to see more angles.

The ride is a bit nicer and much peppier than a 616.

There were 2 or 3 on the local Charleston CL when I looked this

The 230SL was the first of that body style. As the car evolved into the 250

fronts with drum rears and the 280SL finally got 4 wheel discs brakes.
There's other evolutions also - such as carbs to fuel inj. - you get the
idea -

The prices of the latest 280SL were in the mid teens for a nice driver about
10 years ago when I got serious about buying one. The 250 were a little
less and the 230 even less.

Given that 10 years has passed I beleive $5k is too low and indicates either
a soft market or some problem with this car. Of course, there's still 3+
days left on the auction so there may be many more bidders over the next few
days which will either drive the price into the reasonable area or - worse
for you, good for the seller - send the car into the "too much for a 230SL
terrotory" making it not worthwhile to consider.

BTW, -- Parts for these cars were *always* on the expensive side. And some
were hard to find but MB Classic would probably help out - for a price. ;-)

Good luck-

Re: [MBZ] is this a good deal?

2006-05-25 Thread l02turner
The 230SL was the first of that body style. As the car evolved into the 250
and 280SL is got more and more advanced equipment. Most notably are disc
brakes - the 230 had (I think) 4 wheel drum brakes and the 250 got disc
fronts with drum rears and the 280SL finally got 4 wheel discs brakes.

And some
were hard to find but MB Classic would probably help out - for a price. ;-)

Good luck-
