A good friend of mine evacuated New Orleans in his early 80's 300
diesel mercedes sedan, I think 126 Chassis.
Anyway, they are safe in Destin FL BUT he lost the ignition key on the
beach..so, he got a replacement key from the stealer, I mean Dealer

The master (ingition) switch could be in the worn, not-turn mode, too.

ignition.
That's odd. If the car is high mileage,
You also could try Lock Ease a product sold in auto parts stores and have
him try rocking the steering wheel back forth while gently trying to turn
the key.
