Re: [MBZ] KLEB CAR!!!!

2024-01-12 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I have ridden in a few Pintos starting in the early 1980’s. The first one was
my sister’s then boyfriend’s 1972 runabout with a manual transmission. It was a
good first car for him. Not long afterward, my dad got the Pinto bug and found
a 1974 Pinto Wagon with no engine. The plan was to put a 1962 Ford Galaxy 260
V8 engine into it, but he couldn’t obtain a title. He then found a 1972 Pinto
wagon 2.0l automatic with a wrecked front end. The now parts car had everything
needed to restore the wreck to family car status. My two older sisters had
moved out, so the much larger 1975 Grand Torino wagon was sold off for some
extra money and replaced by the fuel sipping Pinto. Mom didn’t really care to
drive my youngest sister and I around in a brown and wood panel Pinto wagon
with a blue front end, but she did it for well over a year until Dad found his
next car, a 1971 Buick boat tail Riviera. Nearly 20 years later in around 2000,
Dad got the Pinto bug once again and found a 1978 Pinto wagon, orange with a
primer front end. After test driving it, Mom asked “you aren’t going to buy
that ugly thing, are you?” $200 later, Dad and I were rolling down the road in
the old Pinto. After Dad replaced the timing belt and I installed the new cat
converter, it ran even better! Then, about a year later, he found a $500, much
better looking 1979 Bobcat. We put new ball joints and suspension bushings on
it and bombed it around until the next one popped up, a 1980 Pinto Wagon with
80K original miles! All of these were the later 2.3L engines with manual
transmissions. It was the nicest of all of them. My guide dog, Joel didn’t like
getting into these old Pintos, and he would slide around in the back no matter
what kind of mats we tried. Then, we found a much more suitable vehicle, a 1987
Voyager van. Joel had the back seat all to himself, but he wasn’t truly
comfortable until I took the leap and purchased our first Diesel Mercedes, a
1978 300D. He would lie on the back seat with his head facing the passenger
rear door, and he would rest his chin on the door armrest and go to sleep with
his nose poking forward between the door panel and the grab handle. I wish he
would have made his automotive tastes known much sooner!!!

One thing your Dad has going for him - he’s consistent!

My first car, despite having driven a bunch of VW Beetles, was a 1970 light

The tree, that is.

The guy I worked for when I was in trade school had an early/mid-60s Comet that
had belonged to his mother, G-d rest her soul. We used it for running parts.
“Spartan” was not an adjective that properly described that car. I recall it

Now, come on - it wasn't that bad. It was actually quite stylish
compared to the 4 door and it had a decent cloth interior with bucket seats.

It was quite enjoyable to drive and I would have kept it much longer
except for the fact that the one I had did not have undercoating of any
sort and had been subjected to road salt in the winters before I got it
from my mother.

My dad and my uncle were cursing how expensive cars are today and how things
were better "back in the day."

I pointed out that any cheap crap car you buy today will last 10 years and
200,000 miles with just basic maintenance while "Those good cars" were junk at
5-7 years.

For example, my folks bought a brand new Mercury Lynx (Ford Escort) in 1983. By
1988 it was junk, the body had rusted "to the windshield" as they say in Maine.
The engine would quit every time you drove in the rain. It'd start and go fine
for about 5 minutes, then just quit. Roll to a stop, wait 5 minutes and it was
good to go the rest of the day. "Good car" my ass.

Of course my dad has the absolute worst taste in cars. He had (in no particular
order) an Maverick, the same generation Comet, Pinto, Vega, the Lynx and 2

with no real issues for 7 years.  Sold it to the trash guys for $350 and we
purchased our first Mercedes, a 1973 280, for $4700.  Sold the 280 a year

I had a 1977 Mercury Monarch 2 dr. It looked nice - White with a white
half vinyl top and the opera windows. Red interior - bucket seats etc.
We bought it new and kept it a long time but it was not a great car. The
Zephyr I referred to earlier was better in many ways. It was a few years
newer and had rack and pinion steering and handled quite well.

The Monarch handled poorly. It had the old style power steering with the
hydraulic cylinder attached to the linkage rather than the newer style
with the actual power steering box. I think I rebuilt the linkage where
the cylinder attached to a ball type joint 3 times. The rest of the car
was OK. The engine and transmission were fine and it did not rust badly.
It was just not much fun to drive.

the same vintage. I polished and ported the head and intake, even placing

2024-01-12 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
My co-worker at the USGS bought a new 1977 Ford Maverick, to go with his
1976 TR7. Both cars were absolute POSes (POSs?).

Whereas my 1976 Chevette - purchased at full list price of $3660 - lasted
with no real issues for 7 years. Sold it to the trash guys for $350 and we
purchased our first Mercedes, a 1973 280, for $4700. Sold the 280 a year
later for $4850.

My father had the Mercury version - A Bobcat. Bright red, black interior
- automatic which meant it was pretty weak.
I think it was still around when my father died. I don't know what
happened to it. Mother must have sold it or given it away to clear the
yard. It was not a wonderful car but my father always liked good fuel
mileage.

The Ford Fairmont was not awful. One of the car magazines (Car & Driver,
maybe) said it was akin to a domestic Volvo. Very simple car. My father
had the 2 door Mercury version - a 1983 Zephyr - inline 200 CID 6 - two
tone grey with a red interior. It was new when he died and my mother
learned to drive on it as she had never had a licence. She later gave it
to me and I drove if for about 6 months. Unfortunately it came with no
undercoating on it and it was rusting something fierce underneath. The
body and interior did not look like it had ever been used but the bottom
was flaking.

I drive it for about a month and almost go through a set of front tires. ?

Take it to Church Brothers, a very good body and frame shop in Indianapolis.
The verdict is that the frame is tweaked from a hard hit in the right front

put the car on their unibody alignment rack, and it was as good as new. I went

He parked it on the street in a bad ‘hood close by, window down key in it, and
it didn’t even get stolen or stripped. It was that bad.

Re: [MBZ] KLEB CAR!!!!

2024-01-12 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
A friend of a friend had a Pinto back in the day. The story goes that it was
the most gutless, slowest piece of trash he had ever driven.

So the day comes to replace it, the dealer won't take the Pinto on trade so he
decides to junk it. On the ride to the junkyard he decides, since its being
junked anyway, to just peg it to redline the whole way.
After a few minutes there is some kind of a poof, bang or maybe explosion,
stories differ but suddenly the car runs waay better. A few minutes later a
big cloud of black shoots out the exhaust pipe and the car runs even better,
better than it has the whole time the guy has owned it. All the power a Pinto
could possibly have.

Literally blew the carbon out...

IIRC instead of junking it he sells it to one of his buddies, I don't remember
exactly.

Being that it's a facelift car the potential for a bad evaporator is probably
pretty slim.

I would love to find a really nice facelift S500. They're getting harder and
harder to find these days. They are wonderful cars.

When I was attending MIT in Cambridge MA there was a sign on Mass Ave just as
you crossed the bridge coming from Boston, right in front of campus, that said
“Cambridge is a Nuclear-Free Zone”. About 1/4 mile on down was the MIT
research reactor. The irony was always refreshing.

At some point they put up signs that said “Cambridge is a Domestic Violence
Free Zone” but they were in the hoity-toity parts of town not the towny part of
town, e.g., where the marathon bombers Joker and Speedbump lived. I don’t think
those signs worked either. I did always wonder if the violence was free, or it
was a free zone, or what.

Our other house is in a subdivision and it has covenants, but they are not
enforceable because we do not have a HOA. If the majority of the lot owners
wanted to form one they could but can’t force owner into it that do not want to
be part of it. Now out here at Okie acres, there is nothing regulating
anything. I suppose if I tried to put up a nuke plant or something, somebody
might say something but otherwise no.

Been there, done that. The HOA is supposed to be having their title agent look
as well. No one can find anything. And do understand that they will be coming
around on occasion with “special assessments” when they need money. Long term
it will be more than just $350/year, I’m betting.

For that matter, I had to pay for a survey of our property. Now on the surface
that wouldn’t seem like a big deal, right? I mean, everyone gets a survey done
when they convey a property to someone else, right?

Nope.

No survey on record for my lot. Anywhere. Sure, the lot is on the plat filed by
the developer with the County. But there’s no individual surveys as a part of
that.

Lucky for me, a neighbor works for a local survey firm. His lot is surveyed,
and he recently surveyed the lot two doors down across the street. That gave
him some monuments to work from, and about 90 days and $1300 later, I have a
“real” survey of my property, with all of the corners marked and recorded. Of
course now that I’ve done my survey, it makes it a lot easier for adjacent
property owners to do theirs since me and my neighbor did a lot of the
foundational work. Whatever.

Re: [MBZ] Kleb Car in AZ!

2023-05-29 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
When you petition the HOA, try to think about something that might be important
to them, and that you are OK with or maybe even want yourself, and then omit it
from your plans. The hope is they will focus on that, you can acquiesce, and
they will be happy.

Do a title search.
If it's not recorded against your title, I don't see how they have any

It costs us around $350/year, which in the grand scheme of things is pocket
change. That and I’ve been assured by neighbors who are in the know and not
members that the HOA pays little mind to our street because of the lack of
members and the age/area. That said, it’s not a bad neighborhood or run down.
With a couple exceptions, all of the homes are well cared for and in good
condition.

My only concern will be when we decide to migrate permanently we will be
putting an addition on the house and likely expanding the garage. Our lot is
well over 1/2 acre, so that’s no big deal. The City is real easy to work with
on this sort of thing, especially if we’re adding an ADU (accessory dwelling
unit) which we would be in the garage. However, we have to get the plans
approved by the HOA, which I see no reason why they would care, but…

We’ll see.

Re: [MBZ] Kleb Car in AZ!

2023-05-29 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Yeah, not quite the situation:

My house/neighborhood was built in the mid-1970s. The country club we’re in has
been around since the 1960s, I think. HOAs didn’t exist at the time, and as the
community expanded around the course and bigger/more expensive homes were built
in the 1980s, an HOA was formed. Because there were a bunch of existing homes,
they ouldn’t just suddenly demand that everyone has to become a member, so for
those in the areas that pre-dated the HOA, like mine, got to decide if they
wanted to join or not.

We’re currently talking to an attorney who has successfully litigated against
the HOA to see if we can “opt out”, as almost no one in our neighborhood is a
member. So what’s the point? If one of my neighbors wants to park an RV in
their front yard, there’s literally nothing I can do about it if they’re not an
HOA member.

Sort of defeats the purpose, doesn’t it? hence our desire to be free of the
HOA. What also sucks is that as a buyer of one of these properties, if a
previous owner “opted in” then we have no choice, which sort of defeats the
purpose of the HOA and is ultimately unfair to us since we have no say.

Re: [MBZ] Kleb Car in AZ!

2023-05-29 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
My parent's neighborhood had sort of an association. Membership was voluntary
and they had no real authority. They mostly did stuff like organizing
weeding/landscaping cleanups at the entrances to the neighborhood, petition the
city for better streetlights and park improvements, stuff like that. If
someone's property was an eyesore they might request cleanup or even offer to
help but they couldn't really do anything unless it was so bad that city code
violations were happening.
