Re: [MBZ] Leaking steering gear box, 126

Yep, just like new. When I was a MBCA member we would occasionally have a
local M/B field service tech rep come by for a QA session. I once asked
about slop in M/B boxes and what needs to be replaced. The fellow said that
unless the box had been adjusted too tightly they would never wear out, the
bearings just get a little slop and need to be re-adjusted. To properly
adjust the bearings you need a few very pricey special tools to hold the
assemblies as you perform the running torques required for proper
adjustment. It's all in the manual. the one thing that he said that everyone
overlooks to replace is the thrust washer and its' snap ring that is under
the head of the adjusting screw inside the pitman shaft that sets the gear
mesh between the teeth on the pitman shaft and the teeth on the working
piston.

Did the slop get removed after the rebuild ? my 126 has about 25
 mm of slop
but smooth operation and no leaks.

Subject: Re: [MBZ] Leaking steering gear box, install seal kit, or replace?

Richard, Trampas -
Many folks, have suggested that the most cost effective repair may be
obtaining a good used box. They go for about $100 or so. I had the one in
my
107 rebuilt by a retired M/B mechanic that did them as a hobby and for a
few

extra retirement bucks. It has worked just fine so far. It was like $550
installed. There have been many other reports on the various lists over
the
years where many rebuilts proved to be less than satisfactory. Typically
if

boxes have been maintained and properly adjusted they are good for a long
time, thus the recommendation for the used box. I was going to try and
rebuild the box in my 126, not because of leaks but for slop, and even
bought the seal kit, but never went ahead because of not having the
special

tools to set up the bearing preloads. Trampas, just how did you accomplish
setting up the preloads. Did you do the rolling torques per the manual, or
just by feel? Did you end up with a good tight box when you were through?

Barry

I have resealed several steering boxes and have not had any problems
doing

it.

Has anyone replaced the seals in their gear box? Is it too involved for
an

average do it yourselfer? I was also thinking of purchasing the
seal kit and taking to a local shop and have them do the work

Or... do I need to just come up the cash to replace the gear
box with a
rebuilt one?
