No Andrew.

BATFE, Bureau of Alcohol Tobbacco Firearms & Explosives controls
manufacture and sale of such items as explosive grenades and full automatic
weapons.

If you owned one as a civilian and were properly licensed by BATFE to own
the device, with all the explosive devices to make it work, you would make
application now,,, and perhaps get the license in 5 years, or that hell has
frozen solid, after having proved you were a responsible citizen, with a
Yuue bank account.

BATFE.. should be a convenience store instead of a government agency..

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes content in Dallas

2016-07-08 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Great idea..
but the shooters were well ahead of those "chess moves" from the get / go.
They had announced the area was populated with bombs [inference here is
remote controlled IED type bombs], so waiting them out presented the
credible murder of other large groups of people "somewhere" within the
control of the shooters.

Always easy to monday morning QB a play.. not so easy when you are on the
line being shot at while trying to recover your freshly murdered fellow
citizens..

As more details come to light, it becomes more apparent this was well
thought out ahead of time, likely with some inside information on the
location of the officers and marchers.

So the question comes, "How do you deal with someone who is committed to
kill you?"

My view is that we collectively lost our "violence virginity" to some
extent.

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes content in Dallas

2016-07-08 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
Robot's role in killing Dallas shooter is a first

There's nothing new about a dangerous suspect dying at the hands of police.
But Thursday night in Dallas, the situation played out with a twist. Micah
Johnson, believed to have killed five police officers, was killed by an
explosive device that a robot delivered.
Two executives at robotic companies told CNN this is the first time a police
robot has been involved in a civilian's death.
"We saw no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a device on its
extension for it to detonate where the suspect was," Brown said at a news
conference Friday morning. "Other options would have exposed our officers to
grave danger."
It's unclear exactly what type of robot was used in the suspect's death. Robots
are common inside police departments, and generally used to disable explosive
devices or disorient and incapacitate suspects that are barricaded. Sometimes
these robots are used to place an explosive near a bomb in order to disarm it
via explosion.
Northrop Grumman Remotec, which calls itself the largest providers of robots to
first responders, declined to comment and referred all questions to the Dallas
police department.
The robot was likely expensive, with a price tag of around $100,000, according
to Endeavor Robotics chief executive Sean Bielat.
Endeavor Robotics sells its robots to agencies in the greater Dallas area, but
wasn't sure if its robot was used in Thursday's incident.
These types of ground robots do not operate autonomously, but are under the
control of a human operator. Similar models are used overseas to disable
explosive devises in places such as Iraq. Using one to kill a suspect in the
U.S. is unheard of.
"I think this is an anomaly," said Brian Hart, the president of Black-I
Robotics, which makes ground robots for the government. He doesn't foresee a
new trend of police using robots to kill suspects.
It's unclear if the Dallas robot was present at the time of the explosion, or
left the explosive device and retreated to safety so it wouldn't be harmed as
well.
Bielat's ground robots, which are designed for law enforcement, aren't designed
to be used for lethal purposes. But that doesn't stop them from being used that
way.
"If the first responders who were there thought this was the most appropriate
way to use it, it must have been the most extreme situation," Bielat said.
"It's tragic that this situation ended this way, but it was in respond to an
even greater tragedy."
Bielat said using robots in police encounters can actually improve safety and
reduce deaths.
"You can't shoot second if you're a person and you're dealing with somebody's
who is armed," Bielat said. "But if you're a robot you absolutely can."

He said he had an IED and that there were lots of others around. Turns
out not to be true, but he could have had remote detonators (cell phone,
etc.) so the cops dealt with it and we won't hear any more whining from
him or the useful idiots.

EYEWITNESSES:

DALLAS, July 8 (UPI) -- Hundreds of people who turned out to protest two fatal
shootings involving police officers instead became witnesses to more violence
as a gunman fired into the crowd, killing five officers.

Seven other police officers were injured as onlookers scrambled for cover.

"I didn't see anybody else get shot, just the cops. I saw cops getting shot,
right there in plain sight," Cortney Washington told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth.

"While we was running, like, they just kept shooting," Washington said. "We
didn't know where it was coming from."

Another witness told MSNBC: "We heard shots, we smelled gunpowder, and that's
when everything got really intense and surreal," the man said. "We just started
to run and grab kids."

Renee Sifflet told The Dallas Morning News she took her three teenage children
to the rally "for a positive experience, something they could say they were
part of when they're older."

"Then it turned negative," Sifflet said.

Witness Carlos Harris told the News the gunfire was "strategic. It was
tap-tap-pause. Tap-tap-pause."

Ismael Dejesus was in his downtown Dallas hotel room when he heard "popping
sounds." He went to the balcony to see what was going on.

"I thought it was fireworks," he told CNN's Don Lemon.

He then described how he saw a gunman get out of a Chevy Tahoe SUV wearing
tactical clothing.

"Man had a rifle, AR-15, clear as day. Pretty big magazine.

"He had multiple pockets, he had three to four pockets in front of his pants.
He definitely looked like he was wearing something in his shirt.

"He got out of there, walked over to the pillar, put a magazine in and started
firing.

"It did look planned. He knew where to stand. He had ammo ready. They weren't
short mags. They were high-capacity magazines."

Dejesus believes the shooter was deliberately trying to draw police near by
spraying bullets to the left and right.

"He was trying to get a commotion going, trying to get cops' attention."

When one officer attempts to engage the shooter one-on-one, he was killed by
multiple shots fired at point blank range.

Dejesus said that it "looked like an execution." He noted how the gunman stood
over the police officer "after he was already down and shot him three or four
more times in the back. It was very disturbing to watch.

"He shot without any fear. He didn't care."

Michael Kevin Bautista, who was taking part in the Black Lives Matter protest
in Dallas on Thursday evening, streamed video of the shootout between the
gunmen and police officers on Facebook Live.

In the three-minute footage, several officers can be seen exchanging fire with
the gunmen.

"They're shooting right now. And there's an officer down," he says in the
video. "It's coming from the right over there, from around these buildings."

Bautista identified the location as the intersection of Main Street and Lamar
Street. The footage shows the officers advancing toward the direction of the
gunshots.

"They're moving in on somebody," Bautista said. "I think they might have got
somebody."

Another witness tweeted a video as she saw the carnage from her apartment.

One woman told {link:NBC Dallas Fort Worth:

were patrolling. Then, all of a sudden, you've seen them just fall."

The reports I heard said the hold out was an active shooter who kept firing
long after the other shooters were in custody.
He had secured a position inside the concrete and steel reinforced parking
garage making himself the modern equal to a WW2 machine gun pill box
emplacement.

To walk in and make an arrest would have been certain suicide. The
individual had communicated with police that "they would never take him
alive and he would kill anyone he could."
Certainly, he could not be allowed to be loose on society. He was actively
involved in the shooting of 11 people, killing 5 instantly, and presented a
clear and present danger of killing more.

Would YOU choose to walk up to him and "read him his rights"?

I pose this question. If you were locked in a room with two mad dogs, which
one of them would you try to negotiate with?

Would you instead choose to let them kill you? Or "read them their rights?.
Or open the door and let them run loose on your fellow man, hoping they
didn't kill or maim you on their way out?

Or, would it be a "reality moment" for you?

Respectfully,
Grant...

[MBZ] Mercedes content

2007-11-17 Thread Curt Raymond
The 190D had a taillight out so I did a little sleuthing on that this morning.
I thought it might just be loose in the socket so before I did anything else I
took that pod out (right side) and cleaned the contact good. In fact that one
was a little rusty and the chrome had flaked off. I smeared some chassis grease
on it. Put it back together and it turns out the bulb was indeed bad...
Go to start the car and it turns over real slow (whub whub whub). I didn't glow
enough and it was pretty cold out. Usually the car starts super easy with
almost no cranking, just touch the key.
So I took it for a little ride and came back here, just in case the battery
wasn't charging or something, I couldn't find my multimeter to check. Things
were fine so I took off on my errands. Made 2 or 3 stops with nothing of note.
At Autozone I had skippy come out with the battery tester. Everything read
fine, he kept it on the load tester awhile and it never dropped from the good
zone for a 1000ah battery.

Leaving Autozone it again sounded like the battery was weak...
My new suspicion is that the Autozone battery load tester isn't up to the task
of really loading up that battery the way the starter on the car does. Tomorrow
I'll have my wife start the car while I watch the multimeter (found it in my
truck).

Question:
Does anybody know what cranking voltage should be? I'm guessing somewhere
around 11v but am not totally sure. Figure in a pinch I could start the truck
and see but thats not really comparing apples to apples.

Might not be the battery, after all -- the starters do go bad once in a
while (about 200,000 miles or so, at least on the 603 engines).

You need to check the current draw while starting, should be no more
that 950 amps, I think.

The usual failure is to slow and make funny noise for a while, then
lock up solid.

 somewhere around 11v but

Certainly less than 10V is getting into bad territory. What
you really want to watch out for are voltage drops in the
cabling. Measure voltage between the center post of the battery
(NOT any part of the clamp) and the other terminal of the starter
(again, the center) while a helper starts it. Should be very small,
well under a volt. Do both + and - battery terminals, the case
of the starter is the other terminal in that case.

You need to check the current draw while starting, should be no more
 that 950 amps, I think.

I measured the 240D, and it was about 350A IIRC. As was the 200D,
both in spring conditions.
