Re: [MBZ] Mitch Needs This
Exactly correct. I've also had a non DDEC, mechanical govenor, mechanical injection 8V71 and a 6V92... by pulling all the tuning tricks to set govenor and injection to "just right" performance was acceptable minus emissions issues.. but fuel consumption was geared to 25 cents a gallon diesel... [a THOSE were the good old days]. The DDEC [Detroit Diesel Electronic Control] made major strides and improvement, for 2 stroke diesels... The shift to 4 stroke ended the day of stroke domination since 1936. Re: [MBZ] Mitch Needs This
There’s a difference between the later two cycle Detroits and their predecessors, and that’s mainly due to electronics that control fuel management. The 92 series were far more modern engines and much more efficient that the older models. DDECII went a long way into making the two cycle engines efficient. That being said, the comparison between over the road operation and stationary standby or prime power operation isn’t a fair one, as the fuel efficiency profiles are very different. -D > On Jan 6, 2018, at 9:20 AM, Mitch Haley via Mercedes> wrote: > > >> On January 5, 2018 at 9:59 PM G Mann via Mercedes >> wrote: >> >> >> >> With the 6V92's I would see 7 MPG to 10 MPG again, always being careful >> to keep the engine loaded in the "diesel sweet spot" of RPM / Torque. > > 10MPG at 35 tons with a modern common rail engine impresses me. > 10MPG at 14 tons with a 6V92 impresses me even more. Re: [MBZ] Mitch Needs This
Well, with the 8V92 on a good day with careful management, I get 4 Miles per gallon, at steady state of 60 Miles per hour that translates to 15 gallons per hour unless it's up hill and I dial the fuel up to make the grade in a hard pull... then. as they say... "Your Mileage May Vary" . or a head wind... With the 6V92's I would see 7 MPG to 10 MPG again, always being careful to keep the engine loaded in the "diesel sweet spot" of RPM / Torque. Vehicle empty weight was 28,000 lbs on the 8V92, it's 40,000 lbs Nothing moves for free, tis said. Re: [MBZ] Mitch Needs This
Like any mechanical system, a lot depends on maintenance. I would say probably 2500-5000 hours. It’s not designed to be a prime power (continuous) system, but you could certainly use it that way. Maintenance is a lot more aggressive on a prime power unit as one might expect. Fuel consumption on the 92 series DDC engines isn’t exactly light, either. -D > On Jan 5, 2018, at 7:38 AM, M.
