Re: [MBZ] MY CAR (and what is going on with Mobil 1)

2006-03-03 Thread Dave M.
Yes, your indy is nuts. The 5W-40 weight is basically identical to
Delvac-1, arguable the best diesel synthetic on the market, period.
However, 15W-50 is not too thick, and if that makes you both happier,
it would be a fine second choice. There is also a new 10W-40 variety
that might be a good compromise. I'm waiting to see which if these
three, if ANY, finally appear at Wal-Mart

Kaleb - sheesh, where the hell have you BEEN? We've had a number of
threads on the TS 5W-30 topic in the past 2 weeks. Short answer -
they are renaming 5W-40 (what we want) to Turbo Diesel Truck, and
calling the 5W-30 Truck and SUV. VERY confusing. I have not seen the
5W-40 on the shelf, at any store, as of yet. I'm still looking.

For everyone else, yeah, Delvac-1 would be preferable, the deterrent
there is cost, and it can be hard to find locally. Yeah, I know you
can buy it via the internet, but with SH costs it ends up being close
to $30 per gallon (or $37.50 for 5 quarts, to compare to the Wal-Mart
jugs). And at that price, we can buy Amsoil from Johnny Bee a lot
cheaper!

:)

However, 15W-50 is not too thick, and if that makes you both happier,
it would be a fine second choice. There is also a new 10W-40 variety

Kaleb - sheesh, where the hell have you BEEN? We've had a number of

they are renaming 5W-40 (what we want) to Turbo Diesel Truck, and
calling the 5W-30 Truck and SUV. VERY confusing. I have not seen the

Just bring an assortment of plumbing/air fitting s to cobble something

The Shell synthetic (and MOST other major brand synthetics sold in the
US) is relatively inexpensive hydrocracked group III oil, and while
better than conventional group I or II oil, it's FAR, FAR inferior to
the group IV/V blend in Mobil 1. Don't try for extended change intervals
with a group III oil without a LOT of testing - most won't deliver.

I do. The Shell stuff is a cheap Group III base stock. It's better
than dino oil, but nowhere near as good as Mobil-1 or Amsoil (which
are Group IV/V base stocks). The Rotella Syn is fine if you change it
at 3-5k like regular dino... I would not attempt extended drains with
it.

I don't remember what year your car is but in my '83 240D I used 0w40, 5w40 and
15w50. The BIG difference was that 0w40 leaked out way worse. The 15w50 still
leaks out but not as bad. At ~10F recently it seems the car starts maybe a
little harder with 15w50 than it did with 5w40 but thats hard to quantify. I
could detect NO difference between 0w40 and 5w40.
My '85 190D starts just fine with 15w50.
No matter what you gotta figure that the 15w50 will be alot thinner than dino
15w40 would be at a similar temp. At anything under freezing 15w40 dino oil
becomes honey real quick.

I started my 190D Euro yesterday morning. If I was lucky it was only
10-12 below by that time. I haven't installed the block heater yet.
In fact I don't have one in stock either. That's how nice I am to my
engines. I dare them not to start and run.

Considered it for about two years and that is how I met my wife! She was
teaching at the parish school attached to the priory I was staying at in
preparation for attending the seminary. Decided not to go and we got married a
year or so later. Bliss, ahem, ever since! Actually, she turned 33 yesterday.
She is a wonderful wife and mother and hot to boot. AND she is happy she sold
her 98 Sienna and bought an 87 300TD! What a sweetie!

For some reason the 124 300TD beckons me to play this game. It starts with
quite a clatter and some smoke - but all evens out in about 20 seconds...but
plugging it in has not been a necessity this winter to get it to start on the
first crank. Wonder how low it can go

The SD - I pamper it. It's my forever car.

Similar to my thinking when I hear the news report bitterly cold for Boston
where it'll be 20. Its always at least 10 degrees colder where I live 60 miles

Lately the idle speed on my son's 1988 190E has been very erratic...
I tried cleaning the linkage and lubricating but it still happened.

Idle speed regulator? The motor/valve end gets sticky, or there
could be a bad electrical contact in the idle speed regulation
system. Bad connections plague older cars.
