In 2000, there was a line in the registry you could edit tell it if it
was a workstation or server. When I was teaching, I'd use that to flip
the instructor machine back to workstation, wiping out all the server
config. Then restart twice, change it back to server, restart twice,
and I'd have a clean server install without going through the hassle of
installing. I'd still have to load the server components needed from
the files on the D drive, but that didn't take long. Other than the
help (lack of help) I loved 2000 Server. Unfortunately they locked down
that bit in 2003.
I don't remember how I found that line. It may be I just did a search
on the word "server" in the registry. Or I may have stumbled over it
looking for something else. I know I tried changing it to workstation
and it did for sure convert the server into a workstation, without any
of the server functions.
I suspect it is the same in nt4 registry. Their program probably just
edited the registry bit. (Delete Server and replace it with workstation
in the registry line)
I had a program that would defeat the "phone home" "activation feature"
in XP and server 2003. I htink it was about 2006 or 7 M$ released a
"patch" that broke the activation defeat. The defeat would change the
registry to make the OS think it had already phoned home and was
happy. After M$ broke the defeat, you had to reinstall a clean copy of
the OS.

Oh yeah, still have a zip drive in the Power G3 .... both the Putty
and the
Blue and White G3's have Zips I think. Dude, NT 4.0 was odd, still
have the
Workstation install disks around somewhere. Microsoft made some slight
code
changes to the NT kernel just past 4 because they had claimed that the
Workstation and Servers had *completely* different kernels. Like, didn't
share a line of code different. There was a huge controversy because an IT
firm wrote a program that would forcibly change a single bit in
Workstation, that would boot it into Server mode. You can't do it by hand,
the OS will change it back. Microsoft flipped. It was hilarious at the
time.
