Exhaust-to-air: Try to track down a junked 1972-1979 VW Bus.  The bigger
Type IV engine that was used for those years had a pair of
exhaust-to-air heat exchangers for cabin heat.  These were much bigger
and sturdier than the ones used on Beetles and earlier buses.  The outer
jackets sometimes rust out or get full of oil, but the inner exhaust
tubes and their cast-aluminum fins generally hold up pretty well.  The
1980-1982 air-cooled VW Vanagon probably used the same design.
