I have heard about 2-3 flaring, not sure if that's the
same as hanging, being fixed by replacing the K1
spring. I will be replacing that on my SD this
spring. Got the kit from Rusty for ~$15. May want to
check with him if the SL trans. has similar innards.

I have a 1992 300D 2.5t with 287Kmi on it, and shows no signs of
anything going wrong. I sort of lust for an S-class, just because I
think driving a German touring sedan that looks like a whale would be
fun, but overal the 124 behaves so much better than anything before
it. I had a 123 and 115 before, and they pale in comparison
performance-, handling-, and noise-wise.

There's plenty of room on the intake side of the 124 engine compartment,
especially once you do away with surplus equipment like the alarm siren, and
figure out the double-jointed socket-and-extension trickery needed to get at
things under the intake manifold without removing it (although that's not a
124 issue but a general 603 issue). The other side of the engine is not so
good---you've got the turbo, exhaust manifold, air cleaner, coolant
expansion tank, headlight assembly, and battery all snug up against each
other like San Francisco row houses. (Did I miss anything?) Still, I've
seen worse. It's not like the V-8 Chevy Monza an old girlfriend of mine had
where you had to unbolt the engine, hook it to a hoist, and raise it up six
inches just to change the rearmost pair of spark plugs.

Re: [MBZ] Need help selecting an MB diesel

2006-04-21 Thread Jim Cathey
Can anyone compare the pros and cons W126 and W124 chassis and the
300SD

and the 2.5 turbo diesel engines?

The 124 has a newer engine, fully as durable as old reliable _unless_
you let it overheat. Ever. The SD will be a bit more sedate, as it's
not as strong as the later engines, such as in an SDL or the 124. The
SDL is a nice car, and the interior appointments of the 126 and 124 are
very similar, from what I've seen. The 126 probably feels less nimble
on the road, the steering and suspension are less sophisticated.
Then again, maybe that's a plus? Depends on what you like.

Without a doubt, something like an SDL is the superior road-trip car,
if only for its greater room. The SD is still larger, but not quite
so much so. (Extra 5" of rear legroom in SDL.) The rear-seat cigarette
lighter plugs in the SDL are nice for travel coolers, etc. I suspect
the SD has 'em too, but I've no experience with one.

The SD will probably be easier to work on, I suspect the 124 engine
compartment is pretty well packed. The SDL is fairly full too, with
the extra cylinder and all. Both models ought to have underbody noise
panels, but they're often lost by now.

Oh, and if you ask me the ass end of a 124 non-wagon is ugly. I hate
the tapered trunk look. So I'd vote for the 126 any day!

Re: [MBZ] Need help selecting an MB diesel

2006-04-21 Thread redghost
Had a 126, have a 124. I would love to have the POS SDL in good
condition, as it was a superior car in theory. Lots of room, all the
appointments of the early 124 and then some. The older turbo 617 is
almost bullet proof and the engine is available at many pick and pull.
The SD was made to last by real Germans

Downsides include it being old and not as full of the updated
engineering that the 124 would have. That SD will drive like a boat
instead of the zippier feel you get in a 124. The 124 may have a
higher price based upon the perception that it is a newer car and the
sellers usually think anything with a tri star has be be minted out of
gold and diamonds.

Subject: [MBZ] Need help selecting an MB diesel

While shopping for a late model 300SD (W126) I came across a very nice
1993
300D 2.5 Turbo (W124) with about 173,000 miles.

Can anyone compare the pros and cons W126 and W124 chassis and the
300SD
and the 2.5 turbo diesel engines?

My instincts are to go with the W124 since it is newer technology and
seems
to be highly regarded.

I'm watching for a OM60x SDL to replace my SD with. Oh, if they had a 124
CD.THAT would be a sweet car.guess I'll stay with my 123CD.

than the 61x engines - and they should be, since they are next in the
series. A minor consideration is that you don't have to adjust the
valves in a 60x engine.
The 124 will have lower fuel consumption, the S class cars have a
unique solidity and elegance that I haven't felt in any of the others,
though my range of experience is limited.

The 124 will be much more economical in fuel costs. The 124 is a nice
car. If you want room, or take lots of long trips, the 126 is hard to
beat. It is a long distance cruiser. 124 is more agile. A low mileage
124 like that should give you 2-300k miles of service or more, if the rust
weevils don't get to it. Both have pretty decent rust protection. My SDL
engine is of the same family, 60x, and is running great at 400Kmiles. Mine
had 177 k on it when i bought it, and I was not sure about the durability
of the newer engines. Except for the 350SDL engine, they all are perhaps
even more durable that the 617. blasphemy> I can say this now with the service my 3 603s have given.

Harry,

I have never driven a 126, but I can tell you that my 124 300D 2.5t is
the best car I have driven in 40 years. It is quick-the interior is
quite roomy-I am a large person-and it is so refined-at least compared
to my 240D. ON the down side-I would like more legroom in the front as
I have a bad right knee.
Don't know the 126 comparison. But can vouch for the 124.
Good luck.
