Insurance isn't there to recoup your down payment, unless it's replacement value insurance. Example: you buy a $60k new car. Shortly thereafter you wreck a $50k used car. Insurance pays you $50k. GAP insurance is there to get you out of a zero down contract, some leases include GAP coverage
