I have a set of gray nearly unobtanium W124 parcel shelf speaker covers if
someone wants a set. I’ll make you a good deal.

These typically break into 1000 pieces when handled.

Re: [MBZ] New speakers for my 124 cars

2019-03-20 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Craig,

There is a hole in the trunk, one of the clips can be accessed, push it up
with a screw driver to release. It grips the edge of the carpet material
on the rear shelf. After that, I used a putty knife to pry up the front
clip (also on the inside of the speaker cover), and then just gently worked
the cover up at the front while trying to move it toward the center of the
car. Putty knife helped to free the front clips.

There is a post at the rear with a locking washer, that is also visible
from the trunk. I have no idea how to get that chinese finger-trap metal
clip to release from the post, so I just broke those off. One could
replace those with a screw / nut if needed. I think my covers will stay in
place for now.

I'll also try to share the pix with you.

Re: [MBZ] New speakers for my 124 cars

2019-03-20 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Bob - I'll put them on my Google Drive and give you access. Tonight when
I'm back on WiFi I'll set that up.

Here are some of the forum posts with instructions for removing the rear
speaker covers and the front speaker covers.

http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/W124Stereo

https://www.benzworld.org/forums/w124-e-ce-d-td-class/1727127-help-remove-rear-speakers-cover.html

https://www.benzworld.org/forums/w124-e-ce-d-td-class/2809874-removing-late-w124-rear-speaker-grills.html

On my '95 sedan, there is a bunch of sound insulation material under the
rear deck, and that insulation covered up the plastic tabs on the speaker
covers. Through the circular hole from the trunk, I used a screw driver to
move the insulation aside, and then I could see one of the tabs and push it
up.

Once the speaker cover is out of the way, there are two black tabs on each
speaker mount that you push to release the speaker.

Re: [MBZ] New speakers for my 124 cars

2019-03-20 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Thanks Allan, I did find something and installed them last night.

I put a couple of 4 inch Pioneer two-way speakers in the front, and 5.25
inch Kenwood two-way speakers in the back. Sound is much improved now.

Removing the rear speaker covers without breaking them is a real pain, but
I was able to get that done and only broke off one post on each.

For both front and rear, the new speakers are smaller than the original.
This allowed me to use the original speaker holder / mount (with clips that
lock into place) as an adapter to mount the new speakers. I cut out as
much of the old speaker as I could, drilled holes in the "adapter" and
screwed down the new speakers, cut off the excess of the screws and they
popped right in. I took some pix, if anyone would like them let me know.

I also cut off the speaker harness stub from each original speaker, spliced
on the blade plugs for the new speakers, and then didn't have to molest the
harness in the car.

The door speakers are bass only in later cars with the active bass system,
which had a separate amp. Sometimes it’s not obvious they’re working until
you turn them up. They typically last much longer than the dash speakers.
