I bypassed the lid switch on my washing machine years ago when it quit
working. No toddlers in the house
it was made.
Anyway the assembly is only $60, I'll just get another.

Angie reported this morning that the washer wouldn't do anything. Sure enough
its full of water just hanging out.
A couple minutes assured me the problem was the lid switch, a $40

Very likely the lid switch. Depending on design, it could also be a
bad solenoid on the gearbox as well (known as the wig-wag switch
when I was in Canada and had to replace one).

If it's a switch either force it open or force it close and the
system should respond.
If it then doesn't, there's probably something else amiss too.
