Re: [MBZ] OT: Intel NUC Mini PC
No laptop is ever going to be half so reliable or inexpensive as some kind of less-compact less-integrated mini system. They're also less attractive to thieves. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] OT: Intel NUC Mini PC
Not familiar with the NUC, but unless it's really cheap, for 24/7 use I'd probably go with a laptop running a Ryzen 4xxx or 5xxx CPU and NVME SSD instead. My 4700U laptop runs about 5W including the 15.4" display, I never hear the fan. I should put a Kill-A-Watt on it and see what it draws as a desktop. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] OT: Intel NUC Mini PC
The theme park I work for has about 200 of them. We've been highly satisfied with them, but we're running Linux, not Windows. I'm told that they can run Windows, but are a little underpowered for that. With Linux, no complaints. They are vastly faster than what they replaced, for whatever that's worth. They run cool and quiet, and are small. There may be more than one model/generation of them. These are NUC6CAYS. Make sure they have the I/O capacity you need, as there is no expandability. That's part of what makes them small/cheap. SSD's do wear out, and you don't usually get much advance warning as they reach EOL. Quality of such devices is highly variable to begin with. I'm not a huge fan, which is why I'm using hybrid systems. OS and applications (all the replaceable stuff) on SSD, data files on rotating media. I get fast, reliable, and cheap that way. (A/V editing would have a speed problem, but I don't do that.) Our 12-yo Macs are still going strong. :-) Offhand I don't think I've ever had a hardware failure, except for disk drives. (As if that isn't enough!) Software erosion has been what's driven the upgrade process around here. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] OT: Intel NUC Mini PC
At my office they use Intel NUCs in the conference rooms with a wireless keyboard and mouse and a big screen HTDV and camera. This provides the video conferencing capability and also common software such as web browsers, presentation tools, etc. Seems to handle all that fine. I'd think for standard PC stuff they'd be OK. [MBZ] OT: Intel NUC Mini PC
Does anyone know about these, have an opinion about them? (No Apple worshiper snarks please). The wife's PC is failing to find the boot device on reboots too frequently now, in spite of the two year old SSD. The PC is 12 years old now, so I'm thinking it's time to retire it - it runs 24/7. -- OK Don "Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect."
