Yes, that sounds like the problem.

From that article, I inferred that if I just left the Windows Update
running, it would eventually complete the O(2^n) process. After my Garmin
maps update completed, I restarted Windows Update and left it. This
morning I returned to my laptop to find that Windows Update had indeed
completed and said I had 41 updates. I told Windows Update to go ahead
and it is now in the process of downloading and installing.

With the new n being 41 greater than the old n, I can just imagine how
long it will take next time.

In reading the comments to that article and then maybe another article
and its comments, I ran into the comment

http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1176387-xp-windows-automatic-updates-svchostexe-100-cpu-ms-did-something/page-12#entry596161741

which mentions

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41404

which is Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows
XP (KB2898785) that's supposed to solve the problem directly.

After waiting forever for Windows Update to determine what I needed and
then installing the 41 updates, I note that I do have KB2898785 installed.

I had not thought of that, but, fortunately, my laptop reboots in Windows
just fine.

It also boots just fine into CentOS 5.10 Linux, too!

[MBZ] OT: Is Microsoft still updating Windows XP?

2013-12-21 Thread Craig
After booting my laptop (a Dell Inspiron 600m) into Linux and updating
the software there, I booted it into Windows and went to update the OS.

It started IE8 and brought up the update page. I clicked on Custom and
it displayed Checking for the latest updates for your computer... After
a while with no results, I tried to close IE8, but that didn't work. I had
to bring up the Task Manager to close it. I noticed the CPU usage was at
100%.

I rebooted and saw that the CPU usage was less. I again tried Windows
Update and again got CPU usage at 100%. I noticed that svchost.exe taking
99% of the CPU. I then used Task Manager to end the svchost.exe process
and saw the CPU usage drop, eventhough svchost.exe was automatically
restarted. I restarted Windows Update, which started IE. I saw
svchost.exe again taking 99% of CPU and ended its process again. It was
automatically restarted and kept to 10% CPU usage, most often 0%.
iexplore.exe takes 10 - 15% of the CPU.

I left the laptop with Windows Update showing Checking for the latest
updates for your computer... and the green squares marching across the
progress bar for over an hour. Nothing else happened.

I do recall a few years ago Windows Update doing the same thing, but I
don't recall why. Is it because MS's server is busy?

Thanks,

Craig

P.S. I use Windows on my laptop to update the maps in our Garmin nüvi.

Windows XP support ends 4/8/2014.

[1]http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enterprise/endofsupport.aspx

I believe organizations for whom XP is mission critical can buy
extended support but it'll be expensive. I think they still support
Windows NT for the DoD for example.

I'd advise switching to Chrome or Firefox as a browser. IE8 is pretty
bad by modern standards, and that's the latest IE available for XP.

If that's all, I'd suggest a virual machine. I use VirtualBox

I update our Garmin when I'm at home and have direct access to our home
Linux-based desktop, so it's not much hassle to reboot into Windows.

That said, I did update our Garmin when I was in the hotel in Phoenix
after my neck surgery. I started the process when we went to bed and let
it run overnight. That was after going shopping at a Radio Shack store in
a mall to get a 4 GB SD memory card to plug into our nüvi because Garmin
had increased the size of the OS and maps to where it would not fit in the
nüvi's internal memory.

Yes, that sounds like the problem. I looked up svchost.exe on the web and
found a few articles that addressed the problem. One provided a fix
consisting of downloading three files and installing them. Some of the
comments after that article said the fix caused more problems, some
serious. So, I didn't implement that fix. Another suggested downloading a
Process Explorer, which I did, but which didn't help too much.

Since the whole point of booting into Windows today was to update my
Garmin's maps, I just used the Task Manager to kill the offending
svchost.exe process and then did NOT try Windows Update (which
automatically starts the one, apparently with a memory leak, which causes
all the problems).

Once that was accomplished, I started the Garmin Express application and
proceeded to update my nüvi. With our DSL connection that tops out at
1.4 megabits/s, the download will take three hours (it says it has two
hours to go). I can't imagine trying to do it over a 56 kbps dial-up
connection.
