The flat rate to adjust the valves on a 4.2 Jag engine was 8 hours -
and it often took that long. I'd hate to see the book on the V12 ---
the best part though was the test drive when you were though -- I do
think the '66 and '67 were the best years - triple SU's. I loved to
tune those.

I'd like to try a early 6 cylinder - say a 66 or 67 - just to have a
reference you know.

Yeah, adjusting valves was a lengthy chore but thankfully once the were set
they tended to stay set. They use shims instead of a screw adjuster - need
a different valve clearance? Change the shim. I had a 59 Jag sedan with
the 3.4 engine that was eventually used in the early E Types - what a
beautiful piece of engineering-

But you;re right - adjusting the valves was a *very* time consuming chore!

Hi Rich,
Another part of the story about the XKE V12 my friend owned - we used to
drive to work together and he had rented a parking garage to protect it and
prevent any problems finding parking on the street. Luckily for me, Jim
(the owner) used to let me drive it quite a bit - he knew how much I loved
sports cars and it allowed him to read the paper on the way to work.

It was an all brick, but small single car garage. The XKE fit perfectly -
but we had to be careful when we opened the doors to avoid damage. We
always backed it in - it seemed like we could make a faster get-away and
beat some of the traffic.

The real magic was when we fired up that amazing V12 - those 4 exhausts
pipes were always about 4 to 6 from the rear brick wall and that big 12
would turn over sounding all the world like a big turbine - until it fired
and the exhaust sounds bounced off those brick walls! It was engine Heaven!
I can still hear that magical sound!

The thing I recall the most about driving it was how it revved - the tack
needle would move slowly - it takes a while for 12 cylinders to make a
complete turn - and even though I'd try to see how close to redline I could
take it I'd always chicken out around 4000-5000. By then, in 2nd gear that
car would be going 80 or so! Even though it wasn't close to redline it just
seemed like I needed to shift - but o what a musical sound a V12 makes!

I believe he said a friend owned one and had to replace an electric part
several times a year when the engine quit. It might explain why so
many of them still have less than 100k miles on them, when a R107 of
similar vintage with a 5 digit odo reading is quite rare.

Believe it or not, that newspaper with about 80-100 car ads in it
currently has two XJS. The other one is a 1987 Jagrolet:

Jaguar XJS 1987 Converted to Chevy V8, about 8k miles on new engine.
$6300 worth of improvements. Sharp! $3000. 989-277-8476

If $2-3k is the going rate for a 1980's XJS, I guess a somewhat cheaper
Corvette would have been a better investment.

Howdy -
I can understand that! There was little to love - except the drop dead
great looks and that Oh My God engine. It would truely take your breath
away. The maintanence could really be a PITA X 2.

And of course, driving a V12 Ferrari just to hear that V12 wail would be a
dream come true.

Seems like there were some V8s in the 70s that had problems with all the
plugs? Maybe a V8 Capri? Or Mustang? Don't know why the Capri rings a
bell - but there was a hot rod Capri in the early/mid 70s that had the
engine crammed in pretty tight - or am I thinking about the GT350?

As seen in the Lansing, MI State Journal this AM:
1988 XJS, V12, runs good, 69k, $2000 or best offer.

I used to want one of these sooo bad, but can't stomach
Lucas electrics and $0.30 per mile fuel costs, even in
a toy car. Maybe if the V12 could be sold for $2k, it
could make a nice place to drop in a 606 with twin
