I don't know that we forget so much as we just do not appreciate what it is like to be older until we get there ourselves. I remember my father kept saying he was getting old and I did not think much of it as he seemed the same to me as he always had. Now, at my age, I understand what he was trying to tell me. He died young and I am now 4 years older than he ever got to be. Randy On 02/05/2019 1:45 PM, Clay Monroe via Mercedes wrote: We do forget. I don't think any of these cars will move with something plugged into the charge port. I can imagine tapping straight into the battery with a couple of 3500W generators on a trailer hitch mounted cargo rack, 240v rectified and wired in series to charge the 400v traction battery as I fly down the freeway at 75mph and 12-15kw draw. Re: [MBZ] OT: drove a Tesla
The whole point of Tesla is it's not supposed to be a local only car, although I bet that's how 95% of the miles are driven in them. IIRC, a car with 200 mile range should be able to go all over Michigan's lower peninsula (far from a hotbed of EV activity) stopping at Tesla Superchargers along the way. It's the J1772 plugs that are too hard to find around here. EDIT: I just checked, and Tesla availability is about what I remember from 2 1/2 years ago, but the 240V Level 2 J1772 population is several times bigger than it was in 2016. DC Combo (J1772 based level 3 fast chargers) are still useless once you get north of Grand Rapids however, everything up north that I can find on Chargepoint is Level 1, Level 2, or Tesla. https://na.chargepoint.com/charge_point If I had a Spark EV with its slow speed 3.3kW level 2 charger (Level 2 on a Spark is about 15 miles per hour or 7 hours for a full charge) I could travel all over Michigan now. But I'd be limited to about 100 miles on an overnight charge if I ventured past Grand Rapids or Lansing into the great north. As long as I stay in the highly populated region, I can drive around and grab a 20 minute half charge off a Level 3 station every 40-50 miles. But that still doesn't compare to putting gas in a car every 400-600 miles. It's a huge improvement though, for in 2016 I'd pretty much have to go to Windsor or Chicago to find a Chevy compatible Level 3 station. Others think Tesla and it's coming clones from MB, BMW, VW, and others will become "local" cars which seldom make long trips; barring the invention of much higher capacity batteries or other power storing devices. I asked that and yes, it puts on the brake lights during regen braking. [MBZ] OT: drove a Tesla
Took an Tesla S for a test drive yesterday. I'd asked about it last year and out of the blue they gave me a call. It never hurts to try right? Outside of the politics or environmental considerations it's a very nice car to drive, wicked fast, 0-60 in like 4 sec. AWD with loads of grip, they send you out with a co-pilot so you can't really open it up but he did encourage me to give it some go and it sure did. Ride is not a Mercedes, more like my Jetta, tight but not harsh. I dislike that all the environmental controls are onscreen which requires you to take your eyes off the road but that's compensated by the auto-pilot which is astonishing. I never took my hands off the wheel but it did a perfect job in pretty busy traffic. The regenative braking is quit aggressive, a bit like riding the brake as you come off the accelerator which means you rarely need the brakes in normal driving. I imagine the brakes will last a long time... The battery on the long range unit I tested is supposed to be good for more than 300 miles, in very cold or hot conditions that would decrease. While driving the range finder seemed pretty accurate. Normal (220v) chargers are supposed to add 40-60 miles per hour of charge. We played with the price calculator and came up with $98,000 after taxes, etc or roughly 10x the price of my Jetta which admittedly was used. I'm obviously not buying one but I get what people see in them...
