Did PBR change their recipe or did I just get skunked? I was at the
clermont lounge this last week (Atlanta's oldest strip club, both by
date established and average age of the dancers (40+?)) and had a few
PBR's for the first time in ages. They were super heavy on the malt. I
had about 4 thinking the taste would change (after all they have a very
high volume of PBR) there but it was consistent.

Re: [MBZ] OT Beer review

2010-06-09 Thread E M
Most of the Doppelbocks I've had have been in the low to mid 6% range. I
have a friend who comes from Germany every couple of years, her carry on bag
always clanging with bottles when she arrives. lol. Had a couple of great
doppelbocks last time, I'll have to look up the names. I keep the labels
off some of the really good ones, and store them in a book, along with a
short note. If I haven't had a beer for a year or so, I always forget what
it was like, the notes help. I do the same when trying different wines.

I'll have a look for Paulaner Salvator next time I'm shopping, see what I
can find. Thank for the tip.

I had some Paulaner Salvator once. I'm sure it is pretty high in alcohol
content, yet very well balanced. It's about balancing the alcohol sweetness
with the hops bitterness and other flavors. If you haven't tried it, do.
Many other beers of its type (doppelbock) pay homage to Salvator by ending

Quebec and BC, than Ontario for some reason.

I find once beer gets over 7%, the alcohol taste becomes too dominant and I
don't care for it as much. $7 is getting expensive, even for a speciality,
low batch beer. We all have our ceiling with regards to what we'll pay.
For me, $3.50 is the MAX, for a 500ml for imported German beer. And for

Re: [MBZ] OT Beer review

2010-06-09 Thread E M
I'm kind of like that too Curt. To me, beer is a bit like a taste of the
world, more so than wine. So I'll buy a number of different imported beers,
and match them up with what I'm eating. I can't remember the last time I
bought a case of domestic stuff. Not that some of it isn't good, I just
seem to make beer shopping more of an occasion now, same as shopping for
wine.

All the suds here have the alcohol content printed on the label. And in the
typical Canadian way, anything that smells good, tastes good, or makes you
feel good, must be taxed and priced accordingly. A can of Fuller's London
Porter..$2.45 a 500ml can! And that is in no way the most expensive beer.
Shocking I tell you!

I looked at the Sammy web site, it was a horrible web site, and I was
unable to discern if Stock Ale is actually still produced. They had
undecipherable pictures of bottles, but no actual list of what they
make. The Old Fezziwig stuff around Christmas is quite tasty though,
Sams Club used to sell a 12 of a SA selection around Christmas, you got
3 bottles I think, along with some kind of spicy brew that would
probably better in some kind of stew.

Subject: [MBZ] OT Beer review

mao asked me to write up my thoughts on a couple of brews we got at Binny's
(never seen so many different beers in one place but this is the US after
all, I
said to Dan that I expected an isle of Bud, an isle of Coors, an isle of
Miller
and a few imported usuals like that energy drink from Holland).
We got a couple of Founder brews, double trouble and old curmudgeon ale,
plus a
big bottle of something I can't remember the name of and roomservice took
the
bottle (although I would have loved to take it home with me for my
collection
but..).
Anywho, the big bottle was nice and carried off it's high alcohol content
(9.5%)
well but the founders brews are too high in the alcohol content (9.4%) and
have
an unpleasant alcohole taste, well some might like that.
However they are all competent brews but the founders need to take the
alcohol
down to 7.5%, to bring out the flavours of the beer. If I wanted to taste
alcohol
I would drink spirits but I find that mixing the founders stuff with Sam
Adams
boston ale, produces a very nice drink.
Sam Adams being a very nice beer but not having quite the ale taste and
needs a
little something extra. Whack in a bit of founders and you have a nicely
balance
ale at 7-8% alcohol.
Well that's my thoughts, buy a box of Sam Adams and a 4 pack of founders and
then
mix them together, perhaps not quite 1-1 but more at 2-1 or try it until you
get
to a brew that you're happy with.
Lastly I have to apologize to the US nation for assuming that you nothing
about
beer, which I thought kinda strange, seeing you have had immigrants from all
over
the world, in fact Sam Adams Boston lager is probably one of the worlds

I also think bottled Sam Adams lager is too bitter, but when I had it on draft
at a bar in Boston it was a totally different flavor, much less bitter, and
quite good.

mao asked me to write up my thoughts on a couple of brews we got at
Binny's

Well that's my thoughts, buy a box of Sam Adams and a 4 pack of founders
and then
mix them together, perhaps not quite 1-1 but more at 2-1 or try it until
you get

to a brew that you're happy with.
Lastly I have to apologize to the US nation for assuming that you nothing
about
beer, which I thought kinda strange, seeing you have had immigrants from
all over
the world, in fact Sam Adams Boston lager is probably one of the worlds
great

semi-mainstream beers for those who like a good, heavier beer.

I have found that Sam Adams Boston Ale on draught in Boston is a vastly
different (for the better) taste from the same-named stuff you buy in a bottle
elsewhere.

Will do, in Adelaide there is a brewery called Coopers

, they make a nice heavy ale called Vintage, about 7% from memory but get wobbly
boot syndrome something shocking from that stuff.
