I was thinking the same thing.  You should hear a new Bentley 
Continental at idle and full lock.  Sounds just like an F-150.

Good point. The fliud looks good, and doesn't smell burnt, but I'll
change it anyway. I wonder if it has a filter -- might have to find a
book, there must be a trip to the library in my future.

Change the fluid before changing the pump.   If the fluid is gray, you 
will need to change pump and flush the steering box though.

FWIW my 95 Mazda B2300 (Ford Ranger) has always had a whiny PS pump.

The power sterring pump on my father's 1999 2.5 Ford Ranger is whining
rather loudly. It seem to work fine, and isn't leaking fluid. The
truck only has 48k miles.
A local McParts has two rebuilt pumps - ATSCO and Beck-Arney. Might
either of them be any good?
