For me an automatic is never "fun to drive".
If it shifts for me it's a toaster...

I think for the $3K ask he could get a much nicer and better made MB.

Those engines are known for blowing head gaskets and having all kinds of
issues. Basically they’re a POS using BMW parts that are not known for being
reliable. Throwaways. If you could pick one up for $500 and treat it as a money
pit project for some reason then it might be somewhat entertaining but
otherwise run away. There’s nothing about them that makes them particularly
desirable other than they could be fun to drive. But so is a Miata.

The center Speedo stuff is a reflection of the original design for better or
worse.

Re: [MBZ] OT Mini Cooper

2021-10-05 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Went and looked at this car today. Cosmetically it's OK, the typical dings and
scratches you'd expect on a an 11 year old car. No rust or major damage.

Interior was a disappointment to me. Front and center on the driver's dashboard
is the tachometer. The ridiculously oversized speedometer is in the center,
between the driver and passenger. This takes your eyes way off the road
whenever you check your speed while driving. The radio and climate controls are
similarly quirky. Everything is plastic, lightweight, and cheap
looking/feeling. Not a BMW by any stretch in that department.

Both the left and right window controls seemed to have some gremlins. The
windows would move up and down as long as the car was moving. If you came to a
stop, they could be lowered but would not go back up.

Owner knows nothing about cars and could not explain the oil problem. I had
thought it might be valve cover gasket but the engine was clean and dry. No oil
spots in the driveway. She said the mechanic told her it was losing oil "inside
the engine" so I guess valve stem seals? But no smoke in the exhaust.

She has owned the car for a little over a year, and paid $600 (!) for a
thermostat replacement and said her mechanic told her it would be $9,000 for a
new engine to fix the oil loss problem.

Re: [MBZ] OT Mini Cooper

2021-09-24 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I don’t know about these for longevity, but I’ve been told they’re pretty
robust otherwise. The price is in line with what I’ve seen in my market for
similar cars based on mileage - their resale doesn’t seem to be all that great.
They appear to be relatively cheap, cheap enough that I’ve been mildly temped
to snag one just to have fun with it. I will say that they are surprisingly
roomy in that I’m nearly 6’2” and can sit in one easily and have good
visibility.

Re: [MBZ] OT Mini Cooper

2021-09-24 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Is it an old one or one of the new versions? If old, then it is a
classic toy. If it is a new one, read the reviews. They are generally
awful. Not something you want unless you are really stuck on the styling.
