Curt,

    getting to the battery on my BMW is a pain also (it's up under the 
tank), so i use a set of cables that i connected to the battery and 
terminated in a large capped Anderson connector back under the seat 
where it's more readily accessible. i carry a set of jumper cables that 
are terminated on one end to the same Anderson connector, and the 
combination has made jump starting and charging chores much easier. (the 
alternator on the GS is ridiculously huge; ~6-700W. we've started all 
kinds of things with those bikes, much to the surprise of many stranded 
motorists.)
    BMW got smarter on later production units of my same model, and 
actually put a positive battery post out on the side of the engine where 
it could be gotten to more easily...
