I haven’t ventured out, nowhere to go for any particular reason. Reading on the
FB about all the dumbassery on this Island makes me wonder about arrested
evolution of our species. And there has been little or no effort by The
Authorities to clean the roads so whatever has(n’t) melted is freezing on the
roads again, and there are lots of massive oak trees right upon the road that
have not moved much in a coupla hundred years whether a dumbass had FOUR WHEEL
DRIVE!!! or not. There has been a huge number of crashes and rolls and
ditchings. My road looked fairly dry this afternoon but there were still spots
of ice under the trees where the sun couldn’t shine. I’m sure those will catch
a few.

#2 boy has his license. To get it, he had to rack up two winters of driving,
as well as the standard hours of supervised road time in ANC. While he was

Alaska, but down here the roads are full of idiots. I asked if he wanted to
take a few spins in the muck. He did not, and has not bothered to practice his

My theory works! On the second full day after the snow-pocalypse, either
Darwin or common sense or human learning had prevailed; the bad drivers had
all crashed and were out of the game, or got scared and stayed home, _OR_
the bad drivers learned and became better drivers.

Yesterday we actually drove around twice, a grocery run at lunch time and
another grocery / movie run in the evening. No incapable drivers were
encountered. Daytime the roads were pretty decent with lots of wet and
then icy slushy places that were shaded, but after dark the roads were
REALLY bad with black ice all over the place. I tried to coax SWMBO into
taking the driver's seat in an empty parking lot so she could practice up
on her winter driving skills but she declined, that is now my job.

Today we made another run at lunch time, more drivers out and about
compared to yesterday and a few made me nervous but we made it home
unscathed and with clean underwear. The drivers that really made me shake
my head would find themselves on a long icy patch, so they would apply
their brakes and lose traction / control. I followed one driver (at a safe
distance) that did it twice.

drove around, said it was pretty terrible and think it will be same
today. We're planning a short trip to the grocery store in a little bit,

clue how to drive in winter weather, I think we'll abort early and head

My road is an inch of solid ice which makes it nice and quiet out here
with only the occasional dumbass trying to go somewhere on it.  We only
got maybe 2-3" of various versions of frozen water, it is all ice
underneath the snow.  It is quite beautiful today even though I hate it
now.  Not sure warming up is going to help anything, it will probably
just melt the stuff so it can freeze more later.  Neither the state nor
the County appear to own any kind of removal equipment though the
bridges are open now, barely passable.  I am not sure why the smarter
folks can't go commandeer the big scoop loader sitting at the foot of
one bridge where they are widening the road, and get a few loads of the
fill sand they have laid up there, but what do I know...  Although
yesterday a guy driving a big grader ran it off the road and got stuck
in the ditch, apparently he was on his way to the other bridge to clean
it or something.

Welcome to the real world! At least you were home and could stay put.
Good job making the schneemann! I bet SWMBette liked that!

The worst one I got caught in was in 2010 I think. It was much worse
than predicted. I was only about 100 miles from home when I gave up the
first night in near whiteout conditions. From there I made it about 30
miles at mid day the naxt day, but the whiteout was so severe that I
holed up rather than driving off the road and freezing to death or
getting hit from behind by a semi. I had a semi go roaring by me at
about 50 when I could not see it or hear it until it was beside me
passing. It took me two days to travel the last 100 miles. Every
other time I had managed to keep going, even if it was only 20-25 mph.
But those days the wind was fierce, and it was in the neighborhood of 0,
so the whiteout was very dangerous!
