speaking of new washers, we bought a new Whirlpool washer for about $500
from Best Buy - but it has no agitator and won't clean the clothes. I
used to think W'Pool was a quality product but no more...
IMO stay away from W'pool... and if we ever must buy another washer
we'll look for one

Stanley Steamers were very fast -- cylinder directly coupled to the axle in
some cases, and big wheels.
One of the Stanley brothers was killed racing one on the sea shore, went out of
control at well over 100 mph (on wooden wheels, no less) and crashed.
Pretty sharp for the day, but getting

You can buy it pretty cheap in bulk.

Our new home has 2006 Kenmore stackables and they have been very reliable.
Replaced the pump on the washer and part of the drum in 5 years of heavy

I believe you can disable it. I sort of like it compared to the former dryers

My new (LG) washer has a cleaning cycle. Rather that paying for the pricey
cleaner powders, I just buy a handful of KoolAde lemonade packets. I think I
use about four of them at a time, costs me all of a buck for a cleaning.
I do the same with my Bosch dishwasher. Makes it all nice and shiny

Went with some fancy front loading LG stuff from Home Depot. They will

need to install fresh flex line etc.

I bought a Bosch front loader a few years ago. Other than the front loader
thing of tying all the shirts into knots and jumping around, it's a great
washer.
For absolutely best life though, I'd second the Speed Queen. Make sure it's
well bolted down though, they don't have "wobble" sensors

On mine you have a volume choice between low and high on the chime tones. There
probably is an off setting also, but I just leave it up. It's not that

that front load maytag dryer sounds like the one that went with the

Maytag was known for.

I have looked at the new washers. The front loaders seem a bit gimmicky but I
get the idea of them. The newer top loaders hold big loads for a lot less $$.

Get a Speed Queen front loading set, the On Premises Laundry version is the
same as the laundrymats use but without the coin boxes. To get full
convenience, mount them with the doors at chest level and get a wheeled cart
that sits
About twenty years ago we bought Kenmore stackable front loaders, they are
holding up pretty well. Had to replace the dryer drum bearing a couple years
ago, that's it. I think the guts are Maytag?
If you stick with the basic models, avoid all the fancy stuff that has more to
break, I'll bet
Sorry to disappoint, but I have a bottom of the line LG and it rocks. I didn't
need all the bells and whistles, just clean clothes. It does that very well.
