 I just bought a near-perfect 2008 MacBook 15 on ebay from a very decent
seller. Can't find a scratch on it. It's FAST and beautiful; the only
negative is the battery only holds a 30 minute charge and needs replacing.
Any recommendations on what sort of battery to purchase and how much to
 budget for it?

And both of these machines are still relevant and more than adequate for
probably 80-90% of most user's needs.

I see TiBooks for a few hundred dollars or less quite often. I have been

I just got a Newton from a Mac buddy who was going to toss it. Should be fun to

Get a battery from OWC.

They have a third party company that makes batteries for them. They are cheaper
than Apple and usually have more capacity than the OEM battery.

I have purchased several of them over the years and have been very satisfied.

There was a service bulletin and a replacement campaign for MBP batteries a few
years ago. Might want to check Apple's Support web site to see if yours is one
that's affected.

Looks like two choices for your MBP - a 58WH ($95) and a 60WH - ($114).

This dependent on whether it's a unibody or non-unibody machine.

I have bought OWC batteries for my 12 PB. Once when I first got it (used, and
the original battery would not charge) and I have replaced that once. I've
owned that PB for about 4 years I think, so to be on its second battery in that
time is not bad. There are definitely junk batteries out there, but at least
based on my experience, OWC sells good stuff.

I love apple OS (minus the do it Steve's way stuff), and their hardware is top
rate, if sometimes odd.

I found that I can't use a 17 laptop -- to big, too heavy, and I cannot see
the screen on the 13 ones, so I'm stuck with 15, sorta half way to what I
want.

You can always attach a larger monitor, it's easy on a Mac.

and clean as much gunk off processor as possible without damaging. Put on
new heat grease, reinstall heatsink. Fire it up and watch problems melt away
no wait, that's just the grease.

Whenever asked, I always try to steer people away from the massive laptops, be
they Apple or PC.  The initial thought is, Wow, how great would that be, to
have a 17 screen!  After they lug one of those beasts around for a couple of
days the luster wears off.  They're heavy and they don't fit in anything easily.

Seems like a 14 - 15 is just about right, at least so I've found.

The 12 PowerBook was very popular in it's day, so much so that the resale on
that one model is still significantly higher than it's fellow machines of the
same vintage.  The size vs. power ratio was very good for that machine in it's
day, surprising that Apple retired it before the other models in the line.

I bought a 12 PB for my niece for college -- she loves it. Easy to
carry, light, and she still has young eyes and can see the screen
well. Great for dragging around to classes, and easier to use for
writing since the screen is longer rather than wider.

I still drag around a TiBook (1 GHz), and other that being a bit slow
by modern standards it works great for me. Getting a bit beaten up,

1. Should have a better power supply with active regulation. I'd rather have a

2. $50 Motherboard, no mention of solid caps. All I see in the pics are

Todays electrolytics aren't as bad as yester-years.
Tantalum caps are good, but not the end-all either. They're more exppensive
to put on the board, so they drive cost up. If it's worth the extra? I'm not
sure to be honest. The lower ESR is always good, as well as the thermal
stability, so for high performance setups with limited airflow it could be
an advantage.

Their failure mode is quite interesting as well, they either slowly decrease
in value, or explode. They're used to detonate some explosives believe it or
not.

Or you can have bootleg 'lytics made with the wrong ingredients that fail
within a matter of weeks of being made.

This happened to Apple and a number of other computer manufacturers back in

IMacs had bad MBs and power supplies as a result.

I have picked up several of these machines, and after replacing the failed

Re: [MBZ] OT computer still shuts down

2011-08-16 Thread Scott and Gwen Ritchey
Recently, my 3-4 yr old emachine motherboard went bad. Symptom was
apparent spontaneous sleep mode that required unplug before it would
restart. When I took off the case side and put a big fan blowing in room
air, the machine would run OK for many hours: thermal problem confirmed. I
found a used motherboard on the net ($80 delivered) and that was the fix.

But I got impatient during troubleshooting and bought a new cheap Dell dual
core for $350 which is VERY much faster. So the repaired emachine is now my
spare. The main downside was transitioning from the windows 2000 interface
to the Windows 7 interface (classic view helped). Also some old 16 bit
software won't run on the 64 bit W7. Otherwise, W7 looks like an
improvement even if this old dog had to learn some new tricks.

So, IMO you probably have a bad motherboard, fixable for about $100. On the
other hand, a new machine may be a better plan, particularly if it's your
main workstation. But first be sure your software will run on the new OS.

You can always replace the PS fan, they're usually easy to get at.

I had to reverse the flow of my PSU fan to suit my case arrangement.
Bit of a custom case, has a huge nidec Beta V fan blowing the hot air
out of what used to be a decorative top vent. Needed the PSU to suck
in air so that it didn't fight that fan (some interesting beat
frequencies were being produced otherwise...). Yes, it's filtered.

I can hear the hard drives. More size gives you more airflow for the same noise,

Yup.

And the Corsair CX430 V2 is the same style. Most of those also
scale the fan speed to the temperature so when it's not working
hard, it's very quiet.

I really like the power supply reviews at http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/

the middle of booting once after that. This morning it started doing it
again. It would not boot at all, would just shut off. Tried starting
in in safe mode with networking, same thing, tried just plain safe mode,
same thing. Tried booting with last known good configuration, it
started normally. WTF? I am not sure if I mentioned it or not but part
of my testing was to try it with only 1 stick of memory, then the
other. It did the same thing with either so if its go something to do
with that, both memory sticks are bad. I also am running it with no
power to that 2nd xp hard drive and also have the cd drive unplugged in
case it was a power supply problem (which I dont think it is). This is
just a cheapie emachine computer I bought about 4 years ago. Im leaning
toward just buying a new one.

It is probably the mobo going flaky. You can get a new mobo/processor
cheap, with some memory, maybe a new id card, and just use the old box
and drives. Take about 30 min to change it out. Microcenter and Newegg
have some package deals usually. Then you'll have a new machine that
should work OK.

Possibly failing capacitors on the MB. Cheap way is to replace the caps, easy
way is to replace the MB. When I did that to Dad's eMachine this spring, I
dropped in a more efficient and stable 80+ certified power supply while I was at
it. Make sure the new MB advertises solid caps on at least the CPU power buss.

I worked on a lot of eMachines in the past, and regretted it every time.

It was obvious that they put whatever was the cheapest that day in the box.
Case in point: I had two identical machines on the bench, both with the same
model number and specs, and they had totally different motherboards, video
cards, etc.

The only thing that allowed you to see the differences was by looking up the
serial numbers on their web site.

Major POS computers from my experience. An excellent example of you get what
you pay for.

If you go the route replacing/upgrading the MoBo, which I would do, make
sure to replace the PS also. Dell/Emachines have a different pinout in the
identical power connector.
The old PS will fry your new MoBo instantly.

That is why I recommend putting the emachine in a car for crushing,

Put it together and load the OS and you end up with a clean machine

Ditto. If you can pull a Mercedes engine, Kaleb, you can build your own PC.

My life got much simpler when I realized that:

- There's only one piece of software I need Windows for (TaxCut)
- Everything else I need a computer for at home, I can do in Linux
- TaxCut runs fine on Windows 2000
- Windows 2000 doesn't have any of XP's serial number nonsense, so you
can buy one copy on eBay and install it as many times as you want
- And it runs fine in a 512Mb virtual machine using VirtualBox.

So now I run Linux all the time at home (still have to use Windows for
lots of things at work, unfortunately), and fire up the W2K VM when I
need to. Windows gets corrupted or otherwise starts acting weird?
Wipe it and reinstall from the CDs, or if you want to get fancy, make
a backup of the VM image right after installing, and have a fresh
install just by recopying it. It's all free except for the W2K disks
which I think I got for $75 or so on fleaBay. And W2K runs faster in
the VM than it would running directly on the hardware (a 1.5 Ghz or
thereabouts Core Duo with 2 Gb RAM, nothing special by today's
standards).

You are making the VM too hard. After you finish an install with the
software you want, duplicate the VM and store it in a safe place.
When the VM gets corrupt, copy the safe VM and put that in the

Ditto. If you can pull a Mercedes engine, Kaleb, you can build your own PC.

My life got much simpler when I realized that:

- There's only one piece of software I need Windows for (TaxCut)
- Everything else I need a computer for at home, I can do in Linux
- TaxCut runs fine on Windows 2000

can buy one copy on eBay and install it as many times as you want
- And it runs fine in a 512Mb virtual machine using VirtualBox.

So now I run Linux all the time at home (still have to use Windows for
lots of things at work, unfortunately), and fire up the W2K VM when I
need to. Windows gets corrupted or otherwise starts acting weird?
Wipe it and reinstall from the CDs, or if you want to get fancy, make
a backup of the VM image right after installing, and have a fresh
install just by recopying it. It's all free except for the W2K disks
which I think I got for $75 or so on fleaBay. And W2K runs faster in
the VM than it would running directly on the hardware (a 1.5 Ghz or
thereabouts Core Duo with 2 Gb RAM, nothing special by today's
standards).

If you have a windows 2000 CD, you can update it to 2000 SP4 with a
process called slipstreaming. Load the cd into a folder on the HD.
Download the SP4 executable. Search for slipstream windows 2000
for instructions.

Or see:

Slipsteaming works on any winders OS from 2000 and beyond to install
any OS updates.

The new owners opened a few of the old stores, not sure how many of them.

I didn't even realize the one here had reopened until someone told me.

They still suck, IMHO, but it's an easy place to go to find something when I'm
in a hurry and not get ripped off by places like Best Buy.

They are heavily into marketing now-they want a phone number for every purchase
under the guise of needing it for the warranty. I enjoy telling them I don't
have to give them a phone number to get the warranty.

HP bought out Compaq some years back.

Due to licensing on some product lines, they are still sold under the Compaq
brand name but are made by HP.

HP makes good stuff for the most part.

You will be hard pressed to find much in the way of desktops these days. When I
went out to buy my youngest son a computer for college last year, you could
hardly find a desktop anywhere. Everyone was selling laptops.

By the time you buy the required power supply, you will find that you
can buy a power supply in a case cheaper in most cases. Nothing
stopping you from buying the new barebones with a case, then taking
out the PS and throw away the new case.

There are lots of places to buy components. Some price barebones
systems. Many of the tigerdierct barebones systems are a set of
components for a complete computer, less OS. I had trouble 10 years
ago with a computer bought tiger. The only way it ever got resolved
was when I made the CC Company do a chargeback. Never got a working
computer from them, but did get the money back. I am less afraid to
buy barebones or components from them. Tiger does email out some
good deals on barebones kits.

Newegg and OWC have better customer service.

is tiger direct the best place these days to get a bare bone? I
have always build my own computers but this last time I just bought
this cheap emachine deal. I have the system less the hard drive
from my system before, its a big server type case but I suppose I
could put a new board in it and use that system. Only thing though
is I am not sure the power supply has the proper connection for
those new style (sata?) hard drives.

HP/Compaq/Dell are all pretty much the same. they all use non-std
components just like emachines in some models. Lots of crap on the
hard drive and lots of advertising built in. They like to hide
things from you, so you get disgusted and take the thing to one of
their stealers.

So HP or Compaq are the same company now, but how are they as

The only thing that allowed you to see the differences was by looking up

I have not looked yet but back when I used to order bare bones, they had
a tool that you picked what MB, memory, case, any other accessories you
wanted and priced it. You could order it anyway you wanted. In my case,
I would probably just go with a new case, MB, processor, and ram. I can
move my other stuff over.

A bad power supply can do all of the things you have happening -- all
it takes is a drop in voltage to the CPU to kill it, and the PS can
drop off line, too. Had the same problem myself occasionally with my

You should also check the temperature of the CPU in the BIOS -- if
it's hot while idling (as in running the BIOS setup), the capacitors
on the MB are going bad and allowing AC signal into the CPU circuit.
Causes all sorts of issues, and can do nasty things to your drives, too.

The only real variable in processors these days is the number of
cores on the die, they all run about the same speed -- which is why
they don't rate them. 2.5 to 3.0 GHz is the usual range, I think
(above that they require liquid helium cooling or they melt!).

So your choice is really, two, three, four, or five (or maybe seven)
cores, and as far as I can tell for normal use anything above two is
totally wasted. Unless you rendering video or maintaining a
corporate size database, you will never see the difference.

Either AMD or Intel is fine -- I personally prefer AMD because they
tend to run cooler and use less power for some reason, and because

That ought to be a screamer running Linux, with that much RAM and the
RAID controller.

I tend to agree with Curt here---if you don't want to roll your own,
get a machine that was high-end in its day and give it a second life.
(Kind of like buying a W126!) You don't need the latest CPU for most
things. Within reason, memory and disk performance have a bigger
impact than CPU speed on perceived speed to the end user.

There is a distinct difference in the enterprise (business) grade product and

Re: [MBZ] OT computer still shuts down

2011-08-15 Thread Hendrik Fay

Well I have had a bad experience with a 'custom' built computer.
Have had pretty much all HP stuff. Would agree that workstation grade is
the go, particularly as the parts would be more standardized than home
use PC's. Had a mobo go on a pavilion a while back and it was an odd
size. Ended up getting a SH pavilion for 200 bucks and just put my hard
drive into it, so as not to lose data.
My HP laptop went funny too but that was more of an software issue,
tried to stuff a penguin into it but the penguins where all too fat for
that old lapbottom, so the missus surprised me with a shiny white thing
that had a fruit on it.
I am getting reasonably used to the apple way of doing things but still
prefer the bigger screen and keyboard of the desktop.

Hendrik
who is sending this from a wired HP with a penguin jumping around in the
box, well there is windoze on the other hard drive but quickbooks won't
run on linux

I love apple OS (minus the do it Steve's way stuff), and their
hardware is top rate, if sometimes odd.

I found that I can't use a 17 laptop -- to big, too heavy, and I
cannot see the screen on the 13 ones, so I'm stuck with 15, sorta
half way to what I want.

You can always attach a larger monitor, it's easy on a Mac.
