Get a battery from OWC. They have a third party company that makes batteries for them. They are cheaper than Apple and usually have more capacity than the OEM battery. I have purchased several of them over the years and have been very satisfied. There was a service bulletin and a replacement campaign for MBP batteries a few years ago. Might want to check Apple's Support web site to see if yours is one that's affected. I have bought OWC batteries for my 12 PB. Once when I first got it (used, and the original battery would not charge) and I have replaced that once. Whenever asked, I always try to steer people away from the massive laptops, be they Apple or PC. The initial thought is, Wow, how great would that be, to have a 17 screen! After they lug one of those beasts around for a couple of days the luster wears off. They're heavy and they don't fit in anything easily. Seems like a 14 - 15 is just about right, at least so I've found. The 12 PowerBook was very popular in it's day, so much so that the resale on that one model is still significantly higher than it's fellow machines of the same vintage. The size vs. power ratio was very good for that machine in it's day, surprising that Apple retired it before the other models in the line. I still drag around a TiBook (1 GHz), and other that being a bit slow by modern standards it works great for me. Getting a bit beaten up, but it works fine. Todays electrolytics aren't as bad as yester-years. Tantalum caps are good, but not the end-all either. They're more exppensive to put on the board, so they drive cost up. If it's worth the extra? I'm not sure to be honest. The lower ESR is always good, as well as the thermal stability, so for high performance setups with limited airflow it could be an advantage. Their failure mode is quite interesting as well, they either slowly decrease in value, or explode. They're used to detonate some explosives believe it or not. Or you can have bootleg 'lytics made with the wrong ingredients that fail within a matter of weeks of being made. This happened to Apple and a number of other computer manufacturers back in 2005-6. IMacs had bad MBs and power supplies as a result. I have picked up several of these machines, and after replacing the failed (swollen) caps with new, all is well. Re: [MBZ] OT computer still shuts down
Recently, my 3-4 yr old emachine motherboard went bad. Symptom was apparent spontaneous sleep mode that required unplug before it would restart. When I took off the case side and put a big fan blowing in room air, the machine would run OK for many hours: thermal problem confirmed. I found a used motherboard on the net ($80 delivered) and that was the fix. But I got impatient during troubleshooting and bought a new cheap Dell dual core for $350 which is VERY much faster. So the repaired emachine is now my spare. The main downside was transitioning from the windows 2000 interface to the Windows 7 interface (classic view helped). Also some old 16 bit software won't run on the 64 bit W7. Otherwise, W7 looks like an improvement even if this old dog had to learn some new tricks. So, IMO you probably have a bad motherboard, fixable for about $100. On the other hand, a new machine may be a better plan, particularly if it's your main workstation. But first be sure your software will run on the new OS. Scott -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Kaleb C. You can always replace the PS fan, they're usually easy to get at. I had to reverse the flow of my PSU fan to suit my case arrangement. Bit of a custom case, has a huge nidec Beta V fan blowing the hot air out of what used to be a decorative top vent. Needed the PSU to suck in air so that it didn't fight that fan (some interesting beat frequencies were being produced otherwise...). Yes, it's filtered. I worked on a lot of eMachines in the past, and regretted it every time. It was obvious that they put whatever was the cheapest that day in the box. Case in point: I had two identical machines on the bench, both with the same model number and specs, and they had totally different motherboards, video cards, etc. The only thing that allowed you to see the differences was by looking up the serial numbers on their web site. That is why I recommend putting the emachine in a car for crushing, and start with a barebones, or other kit machine that you don't have to buy an OS with. If you have a windows 2000 CD, you can update it to 2000 SP4 with a process called slipstreaming. Load the cd into a folder on the HD. Download the SP4 executable. The new owners opened a few of the old stores, not sure how many of them. I didn't even realize the one here had reopened until someone told me. They still suck, IMHO, but it's an easy place to go to find something when I'm in a hurry and not get ripped off by places like Best Buy. They are heavily into marketing now-they want a phone number for every purchase under the guise of needing it for the warranty. I enjoy telling them I don't have to give them a phone number to get the warranty. Dan Sent from my iPhone On Aug 15, 2011, at 3:55 PM, Kaleb C. HP bought out Compaq some years back. Due to licensing on some product lines, they are still sold under the Compaq brand name but are made by HP. HP makes good stuff for the most part. By the time you buy the required power supply, you will find that you can buy a power supply in a case cheaper in most cases. Nothing stopping you from buying the new barebones with a case, then taking out the PS and throw away the new case. There are lots of places to buy components. Some price barebones systems. Many of the tigerdierct barebones systems are a set of components for a complete computer, less OS. I had trouble 10 years ago with a computer bought tiger. Re: [MBZ] OT computer still shuts down
A bad power supply can do all of the things you have happening -- all it takes is a drop in voltage to the CPU to kill it, and the PS can drop off line, too. Had the same problem myself occasionally with my brother's computer. speaking of all this, it has been a long time since I have looked at barebones systems etc. How do you know what to get as far as processor? They dont seem to refer to them in mhz or ghz anymore so I am not sure if what I am looking for is a fast processor or a slow one. Is AMD or Intel best these days? The only real variable in processors these days is the number of cores on the die, they all run about the same speed -- which is why they don't rate them. 2.5 to 3.0 GHz is the usual range, I think (above that they require liquid helium cooling or they melt!). So your choice is really, two, three, four, or five (or maybe seven) cores, and as far as I can tell for normal use anything above two is totally wasted. Unless you rendering video or maintaining a corporate size database, you will never see the difference. Either AMD or Intel is fine -- I personally prefer AMD because they tend to run cooler and use less power for some reason, and because I'm sorta anti-establishment, but that's personal not professional thinking. Unless you are a power gamer, on board video will be fine too, for that matter. Kaleb MSI makes some good Mobos. The AMD Phenom CPU is a good one also. The only thing I don't like about the system is the 400w PS. 500w is the least that I use when building a system for a client. Having spent a fair amount of time since last November doing bench work on enterprise class HP notebooks, I can concur that the consumer stuff is sh*t. There is a distinct difference in the enterprise (business) grade product and the consumer. Much of the difference is not visible, i.e., it's under the hood. When you field strip one and compare it to a consumer model it's amazing how cheap the materials and construction are in comparison. I'm not going to beat my Apple drum here, but Macs are far better constructed, and there is no difference between what I get as an enterprise customer and what you buy at the Apple store or online. Well I have had a bad experience with a 'custom' built computer. Have had pretty much all HP stuff. Would agree that workstation grade is the go, particularly as the parts would be more standardized than home use PC's. Had a mobo go on a pavilion a while back and it was an odd size. Ended up getting a SH pavilion for 200 bucks and just put my hard drive into it, so as not to lose data. My HP laptop went funny too but that was more of an software issue, tried to stuff a penguin into it but the penguins where all too fat for that old lapbottom, so the missus surprised me with a shiny white thing that had a fruit on it. I am getting reasonably used to the apple way of doing things but still prefer the bigger screen and keyboard of the desktop. Hendrik who is sending this from a wired HP with a penguin jumping around in the box, well there is windoze on the other hard drive but quickbooks won't run on linux LWB250 wrote: Having spent a fair amount of time since last November doing bench work on enterprise class HP notebooks, I can concur that the consumer stuff is sh*t. I love apple OS (minus the do it Steve's way stuff), and their hardware is top rate, if sometimes odd. I found that I can't use a 17 laptop -- to big, too heavy, and I cannot see the screen on the 13 ones, so I'm stuck with 15, sorta half way to what I want. You can always attach a larger monitor, it's easy on a Mac.
