How about leasing a car while in a residency?
Why would a resident need to keep up appearances?

You are pretty much correct but this is his deal now so he can figure it
out. The key issue is he just doesn't want to screw with a car so
something newer will probably be less of a headache. One hopes.
Interestingly enough residents' salaries are pretty decent now (as

No way would I put someone on a resident salary or paying medical school
tuition into a car

Well yeah, but as an aspiring young doctor he needs to establish and
keep up appearances. Plus he has no interest in screwing around with
cars, unfortunately. He is driving the 98 DeVille now, which I offered
back to the girl child, but she informed me she prefers to keep the 84

i noticed that about the pathfinder too. I am sure that sends a lot of
them into the ditches. You don't want twitchy steering driving on ice
or snow. I'll take a 110 or 111 for that. with the right tars, they
are rock solid.
there are reasons why every time a little snow falls, the
the difference between first gen CRV and the current one is staggering.
FIrst gen was a japanese mini SUV. (or was that micro?) current ones
are what I'd call full size.
Same with the toada RAV. (its direct competitor) The current on is the
same hight and width as dogde Grand Caravan,
I don't know about the current models, but a few years back I seriously
considered the Ford Escape as a lower end SUV vehicle for the wife. It's a
combo Mazda/Ford, and we have always had really good experiences with both.

I didn't hate it. The Sante Fe had an adjustable
lumbar support, which made it WAY more pleasant
to drive for 14 hours.
Both cars were "twitchy", meaning they have fast steering ratios.
The Jeep had superior electronics, streaming bluetooth

Thanks. He went to the local Carmax and looked at a variety of SUVs.
He rated them all on a list (how organized is that?) and liked the Hunda
CRV the best, but also liked the Nissan Pathfinder which is a bit large

I think the Nissan's have a CVT, which has a very poor history of quality

I recently rented a Jeep Compass, and a Hyundai Santa Fe.
The Jeep was uncomfortable on a long trip.

Best to change timing belt before it hits 100K miles (IMO) if it has an
interference engine. Broken belt can break interference engines.
Except for 3.0L & 3.2L, Hondas have interference engines.

Despite the “Drive it like it’s a rental” thing, rentals cars are pretty well
maintained and most of the places even provide a warranty.

YMMV of course but we bought a former rental car for my wife in 2008
when her Toyota Avalon got written off. We got a 2007 Honda Accord with
22K miles on it for what we thought was a reasonable price.
No real issues with it since. It now has 60K miles on it and we have
done tires, a battery,
I wouldn't mind it but he just doesn't want to fool with an older car,
even though it might be fairly reliable. BTDT.
