Re: [MBZ] OT laptop screen is dying - new laptop time?
Today I found that the CD/DVD drive is no longer recognized by the laptop (does not show up in the device manager, nor in Windows Explorer). It has power, opens and closes fine and the green light comes one, but no-worky. Online research indicates that the problem may be a fault in the nvidia graphics chip. I don't see an option for re-loading the driver, if the device itself is not recognized. I may fool around with system restore later. In the meanwhile, I'll borrow an external optical drive, and start saving nickels and dimes for a new laptop. Six years is a nice long life for a cheapie from Walmart, so I cannot complain at all. -Max ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. I had a student not long ago who had the Acer 710 Chromebook. She was completely enamored of it and had it set to dual boot into either Android or Debian. For the price it can't be beat. Its not been replaced by the 720 which Amazon has for $199. Angie has been complaining that the Dell I gave her is too big and she wants a MacBook like mine. I tell her that my MacBook cost my employer more than my car. She might get an Acer for her birthday, for the small amount of computing she needs it'd work great. -Curt From: Meade Dillon via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Tuesday, January 6, 2015 4:33 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT laptop screen is dying - new laptop time? My niece's Toshiba lost its optical drive. IIRC the drive showed up in the drive list until you put a disk in it but no disk would recognize. Paid $9.99 for a used one with free shipping on eBay. Took out one screw, yanked the old drive out, shoved the 'new' one in, replaced the screw, and back in business. Look on ebay for that model if you want another like it, you can probably find one dirt cheap and just swap out the HD to keep all your stuff. Or buck up and buy a newer machine, which is likely crap, but it will be newer. I needed one to replace an old laptop I was using on my CNC machine, found one for $29 from a seller of used gummint stuff in DC, was up there so popped by their place and picked one up. They had stacks of them. Popped in the HD and off it went... --R On 1/4/15 6:25 PM, Meade Dillon via Mercedes wrote: Dan, It's an HP Pavilion dv6700, the service tag says dv6809wm. Re: [MBZ] OT laptop screen is dying - new laptop time?
A quick search brought this up: http://www.getpartsonline.com/hp-compaq-pavilion-dv6700.html HP has a really good parts and support site to get the part numbers and details. Looking on the site above shows a cable for $15 and the inverter for the same. If you look around you should find disassembly information. You'll need some mini-Torx drivers to disassemble the laptop. The giveaway for a bad display cable is almost always the ability to move the display back and forth and have the lamp go out. You pretty well diagnosed it yourself by looking at the display with another light source to see that the LCD is working.
