The time we did the head gasket on my 240D we had a big old pile of fasteners,
I was stunned when we got them all back in the car with none left over...

back together.  I've got to do a 124 dash next in order to replace a
leaking evap and replace all the dash pods while I'm there.  At this point
I think Infiniti's choice to use motors for all the HVAC doors rather than
vacuum pods was the better choice.

During the take-apart, as each component came out I put all its fasteners
into a small container that I kept with that component. I spent a lot of
time making sure I could find the spot for each fastener as I put it all
back together. Re-assembly would have been faster if I had color-marked
each hole like Wilton did when he did the Evapectomy on his 124 300D (Rich
and I found all those markings as we took it apart). My Harbor Freight
cordless driver was very handy for all the spots that were big enough I
could reach, made work go much faster.

Re: [MBZ] OT my little project

2017-10-04 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Just had a little false alarm scare. My cheapo chinee halogen leak detector
started alarming inside the evaporator box. I'd put a few ounces of
refrigerant in the system and then pressurized to 150 psi with nitrogen,
started checking all my connections. My heart sank, I started mentally
preparing to pull the evaporator box and see where the leak was. Farted around
with the leak detector, tested it on a real leak, couldn't reproduce the alarm
again, added a little more refrigerant, read the instructions.

I noticed that just holding my finger too close to the sensor tip would cause
alarm (oil and grease on my skin). I tried again in the evap box, realized it
as alarming when I pushed the tip against the foam cushioning inside the box.
Bingo! No leak, just gasses coming off the foam, verified with the left over
foam in the garage.

Whew, now I can continue putting the dash in.

After I sent that picture, I removed the bottom half of the air box

looks awful, covered with slime. This is probably the heart of the
problem.

This car does a terrible job at filtering the fresh air, to much dirt
