Be sure to get the “hot” PVC glue that sets up quickly. If you apply it
properly, once the fittings are together water won’t affect any cement that’s
there unless it’s under pressure.

I've heard (and repeated) the bread trick. I think you need to use cheap white
bread, and don't pack it in there.
