Re: [MBZ] Otter/Beaver

2008-02-09 Thread John M McIntosh
Ah, well actually I live just 3 miles from Viking air here on
Vancouver island who now own the rights
to the original de Havilland designs. They have suggested they are
looking into building new
DHC-3 Otter and possibly the DHC-2 Beaver following strong market
demand for both aircraft.

From my dinning room we sometimes get 100 ft viewpoints of float
plane (illegal flight paths) and you
can certainly tell the turbo based ones from the original radial
engines (did I mention they are loud?).
Somewhere in my wife's address book is the cell number of the chief
pilot of Kenmore Air used
when his staff blow over our house at 75 feet.

Hmmm. Interesting subject, as I once flew in a hurricane (after
landfall) in a commercial Otter commuter. Quite a ride, although the
plane itself was fine.

Something totally cool about lumbering along at 1000 ft with fixed
landing gear.

OK - I always had a hard time telling the difference between a beaver
and an otter - DHC versions anyway -- they are both cool airplanes.

It's late. I read Kenmore... "Sears is turning out what?"

Re: [MBZ] Otter/Beaver

2008-02-08 Thread E M
Very close friend of mine was the head test pilot for the Otter's, and
later, the Dash7. The museum where I helped out, was gifted with the wooden
cockpit mockup of the Dash 7. Many feel they could still sell Beavers today
if they were in production. I hear, but don't know for sure, all engines
supplies for the beavers were remanufactured units, and when the supply
dried up, production of the plane ended.
