Re: [MBZ] PODS (was Re: OT: Wheaton Van Lines)

2007-08-25 Thread Curt Raymond

5 nights at Motel 6 is going to be something like $250 (assuming you can find
cheap hotels).
Food is going to be something like $40/day unless you make sandwiches so
another $200.

Its still going to be cheaper with the Uhaul but I'm not sure I'd do it...
Although we used Uhaul last year to move here and the truck was surprisingly
good. About a '95 F350. Musta had a honking v8 because it had plenty of power
even fully loaded. Transmission shifted fine too.
When I moved out of my parent's house in '99 the little Toyota Uhaul had almost
no reverse. We used my S15 nose to nose to push it up to the apartment building
to unload...

A 17' U-Haul is only $1446 in comparison, although
that does not include the cost of fuel and motels.
Figuring 300 gallons of fuel at 10/mpg and 3000 miles,
you're still under $1000 for fuel alone.

Granted, there is something to be said about having
someone else do the driving, but...

Re: [MBZ] PODS (was Re: OT: Wheaton Van Lines)

2007-08-24 Thread Robert & Tara Ludwick
Figure the fuel on that uhaul at closer to 4-5 mpg.
When I had to rent a uhaul and a car trailer to get from Buffalo NY to
Little Rock AR a few years ago it cost me 2 grand for the equipment and
a minor fortune for the gas ( and that was before the gas prices went
nuts ) and all I was hauling was the car, the box was empty , car pooped
out, engine folded on the turnpike and had to get it home. That was for
what was basically a one day run.

Our town passed an ordinance that those things could only sit around for
a week max. People were parking them in the driveway to store random
stuff for lengthy times. They did not fit in well with neo-
Georgian etc.

Ouch. Then again, I have no idea what moving rates
are these days, either. Nothing was mentioned about
weight in the quote, either. I think I'll run a quote
for a 16' U-Haul to see what it compares to.

I like the idea of ditching everything before you
move. The minimalist thing appeals to me.

Do they do cross-country moves, or just local stuff?
I've seen the ads around here for them, and while I
know they're a national brand, I was sort of curious
if they did long distance moves, and if so, what sort
of latency they had...

I am assuming they charge for the container as well as
the weight.

PODS is a great company to use if you're planning to do your own move.
There's no rush to do it since the container is on your property for up to a
month. The same is true once it's moved to your new location.
