Re: [MBZ] Pan Plug
That is correct. The old pan has the hex plug, so the opening is large, and with damage Huge. I think Marshall mentioned that the pans come with a variety of plug holes in the 12 and 14 size. I got a pan with a 12 hole, but a 14 plug. Next one may end up a 14 pan, so might get a 12 plug On Thursday, February 16, 2006, at 03:18 PM, R A Bennell wrote: Wasn't that the reason why you needed a new pan in the first place? Re: [MBZ] pan plug
Just confused why I am not able to make the bolt fit. I guess I can find one at NAPA (plug) since I would like to get her running sooner rather than letting the present cold spell stop her and freeze her guts. If I had taken lil' sis off your hands, then what would you be doing? What kind of sick person would I be to deprive you of a chance to play doctor? Have you been able to turn the crank to see the cams moving the valves? You did say it was getting fuel from the IP. Possible gummed up injectors? Glow does not glow at all, or just crank it and nothing happens? On Wednesday, February 15, 2006, at 06:00 PM, kevin kraly wrote: See? You shoulda bought my 220 with a good pan and plenty of spare parts to keep Gumpy going for a while! Actually, I've begun diagnosing the no start problem with this new-to-me 220D. The VC is off now so I'll be able to tell if the valves are opening and closing as they should. Re: [MBZ] Pan Plug
yep, that huge drain plug is what ripped out of Gump. Must have been some goon in SF pulled the wrong size plug for the package that Rusty had sent out. I know it was not a mistake on his end. Inside were all the little bits Rusty sent so that Gump could be back on the road. I think I will spend the frozen day tomorrow installing the pan. I did have one problem. For some reason I am not able to get the drain plug that came with the pan installed. Has there been an upgrade to either the pan or the bolt in the past such that maybe the old bolts are too large for the new pans, or the new pans are too tight for old model bolts. This bolt just seems too large to fit the tiny hole, and IIRC the original pan had a much larger plug that was hex keyed. Part number on the bolt is 1 111-997-03-30. Re: [MBZ] pan plug
So it could just be a parts pull issue and there is a chance I get another pan and this bolt will fit. The way I drive, that might just happen On Wednesday, February 15, 2006, at 08:20 PM, Marshall Booth wrote: OK Don wrote: i had to replace a pan in my 220D - years ago, and I seem to remember that the original pan had the large drain bolt with the hex key, and the new one had the smaller bolt -- don't remember how I got the new bolt though -- I replaced the original pan because someone had cross threaded the large bolt (dont' ask me how) --- More than a few Mercedes engines came with DIFFERENT sized drain plugs (M-14 or M-12) and the only way to tell is look and measure them. I've had 601 engines with both sized plugs, but I believe that OM61x engines all have M-12 plugs. Re: [MBZ] Pan Plug
went to FAPS and picked up a 12 1.25 plug for the pan. Took the pan with me. That fit, so the one that came was 14. Will hold onto the large one in case I get a pan with a large hole.
