I can say much the same. I've found it's very true the old adage. It isn't
what you know, but who you know. LinkedIn is supposed to capitalize on that.
Like I said, I haven't needed to use it for that yet, and Allan mentioned
he's never received an request for an introduction, so I can't give you any
idea of how successful the system is just yet.

However, if you have a portfolio of art the best thing to do is go online
with it. At least that is my opinion on the subject.

I'm on it, though I have not ever received any unsolicited contacts
from anyone else via LinkedIn. I have really not put any effort into
my LinkedIn portfolio though, I only signed up because most of the
other people in my office are on it... I can see where it would be
good for the sort of work that requires or benefits from maintaining a
large network.

Very well said, Ernest.
I hadn't thought of a couple of those angles.

I can say that almost all the jobs I have gotten in any field have been
through someone I knew, or knew through someone. That's the key I think.
People just feel much much better about going with someone they know or have
some connection to.

Sort of the same with trying to find a date.

Re: [MBZ] Pardon the OT - heard of this employment website - scam or no

2008-02-14 Thread Zoltan Finks
Thanks, Allan. Yeah I do think that'd be a great help - to have someone give
me a job hunting makeover. Well, really all that needs making over is my
portfolio and admittedly a lot of that problem has been caused by my
laziness. I have some good work to show, but I haven't felt like playing the
game of packaging it all prettily.
I have found that half the battle is having the degree and the work to show;
the other half is playing the game. The game and I are not good friends.

My wife suggests that their may be some "headhunter" organizations out there
who may be willing to sit down and talk and make suggestions. I've yet to
really find one.

Brian,

Craigslist has been a great resource for me, as has Monster.com;
since they've showed up on the scene, *nothing* has gotten me as much
action as they do, but i'm admittedly in a very different field and
environment than you are.
employeesources.com seems to me to be a scam; their URL registration
makes them look dodgy, they've hit Craigslist lists all over the
country, the domain for their contacts takes you to another site that
looks similar, which shares an address with yet another site that looks
similar... and judging by what you say, they're not responsive enough to
be actually looking to place people. i wouldn't expect anything good
from them.

finding work as a Graphic Artist is weird; i feel for you. i know a
very few who actually *do* make a living at it (and many more that try),
and most of their contacts come from existing contacts who they've made
through a variety of strange ways; none of them conventionally. problem
is, it seems most every kid with a computer program thinks they can do
it, and most of the work going to independents goes at 'kid-rate'. most
truly large companies now that are willing to spend on it deal only with
other large companies (that often only pay the actual artists slightly
better than 'kid rate', and the work is sporadic. pay generally sucks
(by my standards) because it seems there are so many people that think
they can do it and are willing to do it for so little thinking there's a
"Big Break" for them at the end of a rainbow somewhere).
know that you're looking for good pay for a job that most people
that hold the purse strings aren't hot to pay well for, since they all
think there's nothing to it because of what they see their kids doing on
their computers. in the meantime, know that good things come to those
who wait as long as those who wait worketh like hell while they wait,
and build yourself a standout portfolio to put out in front of everyone
that you can think of that might ever need you, or know someone who does.
be prepared to wait a while (or maybe forever) for that Dream Job,
and figure out what you're going to do for a living in the meantime. ;-)

cheers!

Brian,

Where are you located? Have you set up an account on LinkedIn.com? You build
your network out of people you know, and then can get "introduced" to people
that *they* know. I haven't had to use it for finding a job yet, but it is

Okay, actually I decided to go ahead and move forward with the "application"
process.
After correcting some strangely incorrect phone numbers for myself that they
wanted confirmed, and checking "no" to several offers, I get a references
page.

Great. Now in order to proceed I have to hand over the names and numbers of
folks I know.

I normally shut down immediately anything that smells like a scam, but I am
vulnerable here in my desperation to get a decent job, and they are,
possibly, preying on that.

Times like this I think of the Iron Maiden song "The Evil That Men Do".

Hate to admit it, but this list seems a great source for
everything-savvy-folks.
I've been fruitlessly job searching for some time now and I found an ad on
Craigslist seeking a graphic artist.

I go ahead and follow the link and it's a website called "employee
sources": http://employeesources.com/

i don't know whether to go back to bed or mess with kirby parts and build a
vacuum. somehow i find building a vacuum more relaxing than building a
laptop, although i am not very good at either.

it doesn't quite sound right to me . did you at least do a google search on
the website? that normally will tell you what is what.

[MBZ] Pardon the OT - heard of this employment website - scam or no

2008-02-13 Thread Zoltan Finks
Hate to admit it, but this list seems a great source for
everything-savvy-folks.
I've been fruitlessly job searching for some time now and I found an ad on
Craigslist seeking a graphic artist.

I go ahead and follow the link and it's a website called "employee
sources": http://employeesources.com/

Most of the listings seem to good to be true in terms of their requirements
and compensation, and in terms of their enthusiasm. What do I have to lose?
I apply.

But in the app. process, questions are asked like what is my cel phone
carrier, and how do I feel my credit is. And several opportunities are given
to check boxes to request information to be sent to me on things like buying
insurance and starting a business and improving my credit.

I got a text message today - the day after applying - giving me a phone
number to call regarding my application. I call and it simply tells me to
log into the website and confirm my contact information, after which my app.
will be further processed.

Now this could be a legit headhunting type operation that happens to solicit
the applicants. - or - The whole thing could be a scam to collect personal
information.

BTW nothing was asked in terms of my social or bank acct numbers or
anything. They just have both our phone numbers now, so we'll be watching
for telemarketing calls to begin on our cel phones.
