Sounds more like engine problem than the actual pump based on fact engine dies
when trigger pulled (demanding engine deliver more power). Probably fuel,
maybe main jet blocked by corrosion.

I think my gas powered Troy built power washer is fubar. Pump might be locking
up. I have had it probably 3-4 years but not used it that much. Last year it
was working fine but the last time I tried to use it, it would start up but as
soon as I pulled the trigger it would bog down and kill the engine.

Yesterday I got it out and it fired right up after the first pull and ran fine
for a couple of minutes then slowed down and died. Pulling the cord the motor
felt like it had a load on it and would start but immediately die. After a
couple of times at this then I couldn’t pull it fast enough to get it to start.
If I pulled the trigger on the gun engine would turn over more freely and would
start then die. Maybe it was taking water pressure off the pump.

Reading the manual it says no maintenance is required and pump is sealed for
life. I hen admittedly not maintained it by the book. I believe you are
supposed to drain the water out of the pump after use and saw something about
squirting pump saver into it for winter storage. I usually just unhooked the
hoses then rolled it into the garage.

Anything I can do with this thing or is it fubar?

Search for a replacement pump, buy and replace the pump..
Motor starts and runs, so most likely is OK...

Pump alone should be much less than a new washer. Once pump is removed,
you should be able to run the engine, sans pump... if it runs OK... it is
good.

"Sealed for life" means you can't add oil until it breaks and we sell
you a new one... great marketing plan? Not for guys like us who actually
fix things...

Check the pump, it should have a drain port for oil.. or a fill port for
oil.. Washer pumps typically use synthetic single grade oil... like a 30
wt when you take it off... turn it over by hand to feel for "stuck
parts" and look for the factory fill port... If you left water in the pump
over winter... it may be the pistons etc are rusted up replace with new
pump...

The marine Sta-bil doesn't do that (bought a bottle last year and left it at

stabilizing the fuel though.

Best thing to do is run it out of fuel and store it empty, if you can't do

All good points about bigger is better if you want to really peel paint
with it. I presently have a Honda powered [8 hp] one that puts out 3500
psi at the tip. It has the quick disconnect tip set which I find very handy
since it allows lots of variation in the washers use.

I also purchased a separate attachment for it that uses water pressure to
blast sand. Previous sand blasters I've had used air pressure and were
always over tasking the compressors. At 3500 PSI water pressure , not the
case. Talk about power cleaning !!!
Down to bare metal in seconds. Obviously, do not use it on sheet metal
parts.

In the past year of use, no problems with the engine or wash pump. I
suggest that for winter storage you want to use a product called Staybil in
the gas tank which keeps the fuel from turning to varnish, and make sure the
hoses and pump are drained of water if you are above the freeze line.

Bigger cost more money, so the question to be answered is what do I really
want to use it for... a smaller unit with 2000 PSI pressure will do a nice
job if you are only washing your car of hosing off the deck, but if you run
mud bogs and have sea gulls on the deck you will need more volume and
pressure, thus more cost.

The marine Sta-bil doesn't do that (bought a bottle last year and left it

 stabilizing the fuel though.

Best thing to do is run it out of fuel and store it empty, if you can't do

All good points about bigger is better if you want to really peel paint
with it. I presently have a Honda powered [8 hp] one that puts out 3500
psi at the tip. It has the quick disconnect tip set which I find very
 handy
since it allows lots of variation in the washers use.

suggest that for winter storage you want to use a product called Staybil in
the gas tank which keeps the fuel from turning to varnish, and make sure
 the
hoses and pump are drained of water if you are above the freeze line.

Bigger is better.

Keeps hands, feet etc out of the path of the spray.

Be sure to winterize if you live where it gets cold enough to matter.

I have 2 of them. My first is/was a Campbell Hausfeld unit - 4 HP Briggs
- vertical shaft 1600PSI. Works OK. Really could use a bit more umph if
you want to remove grease from an engine or that sort of thing.
Has an adjustable wand so you don't swap the individual heads on and
off. Wand broke after a couple of years and was expensive to replace. It
is now out at the lake.

Second one is a bit bigger but a Chinese clone of some sort. More
pressure - 2250 or 2400 PSI or some such claim. Horizontal shaft and
pump. Individual nozzles rather than adjustable. I like it better.

Neither one was expensive. You could easily pay twice as much as I paid
for either of these, especially if you want a genuine Honda engine etc.
Not really worth it in my opinion unless you really plan to work it hard.

I don't use it much but it serves my purpose pretty well.

I have a pretty low opinion of Northern Tool. They seem to sell
literally the exact same stuff as Harbor Freight, just in different
colors. NT prices are usually higher, though, and they are less
accommodating about warranty claims in my experience---I had a heck of
a time getting them to replace a log splitter that blew up its
hydraulic pump after one winter's use, whereas I'm sure if I'd bought
it from HF I could have taken it back to the store and they'd have
replaced it no questions asked.

Don't knock Sears.

I bought a 6.5 HP Sears pressure washer on sale probably 6-7 years ago.

Other than a cracked fuel cap, it has worked flawlessly. Briggs Stratton
engine, good runner, plenty of power.

The real benchmark of a good pressure washer is nothing more than power. Get
the most powerful unit you can afford.

I say this based on living in Florida, where ownership of a pressure washer is
almost mandatory.

My pressure washer, using the proper nozzle, will easily cut through a 4x4.

I would avoid the electric models, as they are woefully underpowered.

2011-06-22 Thread Dieselhead
Depends on what you plan to do and how often you use it. for
electric, buy Karcher only. Never snears or campbell housefeld.
they melt with a very low duty cycle.

Electric is good for occasional use. Serves my purposes. But with
the karcher, I got the rotating head. that makes all the difference.
I never use the other stuff, and without the rotating head, I would
probably agee the electric are now useful. But with it, the karcher
does all i need. I used it to peel paint off a house before
painting. It does not strip paint, but does peel anything loose and
any dirt/chalk.

I despise briggs engines, and I will put up with some annoyance to
use an electric motor that runs when you flip the switch (like a
Diesel) rather than futzing with a stupid Briggs trying to get it to
run.

Now put a one cyl Diesel on, and I will be happy.

Either can destroy surfaces if you're using them improperly, the
size of the swath is all that varied. The rated pressure of both
was about the same, but the GPM was quite different. Mine has an
adjustable valve for setting the pressure. I paid about $700 some

[MBZ] Pressure washers

2007-08-11 Thread Glenn Brown
Since I know absolutely nothing about pressure washers and am considering
getting one for cleaning vinyl siding, etc. on house situated in the woods.
What's the consensus . . . brand, pressure, etc.?
TIA.

Re: [MBZ] Pressure washers

2007-08-11 Thread LWB250
Depends on what you want to spend, along with the
amount of pressure you want to get out of it.

A decent +2000 psi 5-6HP name brand pressure washer
will probably set you back $300-$400. Don't bother
with the electric ones - they're prety much worthless
for something as major as cleaning siding.

I have a 6HP Craftsman from Sears (probably built by
Generac or MTD) that was around $325 on sale last
year. It will cut through a piece of wood with the
pinpoint nozzle. It also has some sort of goofy
foam nozzle that came with it, but I have never used
it.

I would look for a model with pressurized lubrication,
for starts. Many of them also offer a setup with
StaBil packets in the gas cap, which would be nice
for someone in a temperate climate who isn't using the
thing year 'round.

Another thing to look for is a hose/gun/nozzle
arrangement that comes apart. Otherwise, if something
in this part of the system pukes, you have to buy the
whole outfit. I say this because I melted a hose (it
was against the exhaust guard and I didn't realize it)
and the replacement hose was $25.

Pressure washer plus house is no good. Get a stiff brush, a 5 gal pail
of water with a half gallon of bleach, and your hose and have at it.
There is a reason why a PW saves so much time (hint: first word pressure)

Re: [MBZ] Pressure washers

One of the most important things that they never talk about is water flow to
the pressure washer. If you hook it up to a city system you'll need to use
3/4 hose to connect between the faucet and PW.

And there's no telling how much flow you'll get. But you can ask the
city - you might get 60#s maybe more.

Then again, there's the official answer and the real answer. ;-)

You said this is for a house in the woods - perhaps will you be using a well
w/pump? Make sure it has sufficient flow (the PW will provide the
ressure) - without flow you can do as much holding your thumb over the end
of the hose.

You might be $$'s ahead by renting something - I bought a PW a couple of
years ago and it hasn't performed as I'd hoped.

Pressure washer on good wester cedar siding = gouged up siding.

Wash by hand unless you don't mind rather severe erosion marks in the
siding.

You can blow old vinyl right off the house.

Cousin wrote me that he had put a gate valve and 3000 lb (oxygen?) gauge on
his pressure washers high pressure line so he can bleed off part of the
water and have any pressure he wants at the nozzle. He uses it on his
wheels, engine, parts, etc. at lowered pressure with no damage, he says.

Glenn,

I got a Devilbiss at Sam's club about 5 years ago, and have used it for
everything from aging Levis (not for me) to cleaning the swimming pool.
Devilbiss is a name brand in pumps from way back! It is Powered by a 5 hp
Honda
engine and the max pressure at 2.0 GPM, is 2200 PSI. You definitely want a
gas
powered unit as you can adjust the running speed to control the discharge
pressure down to about 1000 PSI. Some small engines WILL NOT last 2 years,
let
alone 5 years. You get what you pay for but even with the Honda engine, I
think I paid $295. Watch for one that comes with two nozzles, one is your
combination nozzle that can go from a pinpoint stream to about 25 degrees. It
also will siphon soap from a container while flowing at low pressure. The 2nd
rotary nozzle is designed to move the pinpoint output automatically so that
you have less of a chance of damaging something while using maximum force.

The main reason for using a pressure washer is to get more work out of less
water..Raising the pressure, reduces the flow needed. A pressure washer will
work with very little line pressure on the source, be it a well pump or a
standing reservoir. The volume, of course, will depend on the rating of your
unit.
Just when you think you can use a pressure washer on something, you will
screw it up--always test on something you don't need. Contrary to recent
reports, I have been cleaning my tires and wheels since day one. No rubber
damage
has ever occurred, and the paint on wheels is quite well done. I also clean
all my car engines, from the diesel to 2000 Caravan. I wet the engine down
with Gunk Foamy Brite engine cleaner, let it soak, and then blast it off.
Common sense should prevail, but I never cover anything in the engine
compartment. The Gunk seems to cool the engines enough that shock damage is
not an
issue, but never spray water directly on a hot engine

These things can harm yourself, small children, and dumb animals. Don't let
your kids play with a pressure washer! Don't let your dog try to bite the
stream like they do with the garden hose. With the wrong nozzle and/or
setting, you can blow paint off your car, your house, etc. The nozzle is on a
36
inch wand for one good reason, you shouldn't try to rinse your hands with the
pressurized water. I cut mine down to 18 inches for better maneuverability
in the engine compartment.

Re: [MBZ] Pressure washers

There is no doubt that you can do some serious damage
with a pressure washer if you're not careful. I know
from experience with trying to pressure wash my pool
cage and the high pressure nozzle (which did a great
job of getting the anodized aluminum clean) cutting
the screen like it was butter. Ouch!

My pressure washer has different nozzles that limit
pressure, so I can choose the nozzle to meet the needs
for the most part.

Re: [MBZ] Pressure washers and Cars

2007-07-16 Thread Dan Weeks
My brother has a '42 International K-7 flatbed that he got for $800.
It was painted with latex house paint long ago, but after many
decades in Oregon it was so covered with moss that you could hardly
see the paint. I did him the favor of blasting the moss off with a
pressure washer when I borrowed it once. Oh, MAN! my brother said
when he saw it. Now you've ruined the patina! No worries--as soon
as it rained, the moss bloomed again. I think it's almost back to
where it was. I expect lichen to join it soon. Brother is once again
happy. Unrestored doesn't begin to describe it. The tires are from
the early sixties and have fissures in the tread the size of sidewalk
cracks. I powerwashed them, too, just to show him how bad they were.
He approved of that. Nice siping job, he said. But it runs great--
he's pulled semis hundreds of miles with it. 89 hp and ten gears.
First low range is so low that at idle, it would loose a race with
the minute hand of a clock. When you let the clutch out, for a while
all you here are little clicks as the lash gets taken up in the
trans, the u-joints, and the rear end. Eventually, it starts creeping
forward. That is a truck.
