They are in the ends of the rear bumper cover on our Subaru. Since it uses
microwaves (RF) and the covers are plastic, they are hidden inside - you
can't see them from the outside.

Yep, the caustic cleaner for industrial use is around 1.5.    So any
caustic cleaner would work. no need to pay $13-16 a quart.   The last
one we used was way-vos  from Birko corp.   I always called it huevos,
and I suspect a lot of the amigos who use it also call it huevos.
Caustic cleaner is a commodity.   every seller claims only their has the

OK it is a caustic cleaner.   I never checked weight or specific gravity
on the caustic cleaners I was around.   At any rate, that is a lot of
lye.   The usage rate is 4-8 oz per gallong, so that brings it back into
the reasonable range.    My guess is that any caustic cleaner
(industrial) would probably work the same way, and be a whole bunch cheaper.

I forgot to attach the photo of the data plate on the 5 gal US
cleaner.   If anyone wants to see it, let  me know.  I'll send it
direct.   That will make Philip happier.

Seems they run 35 to 37khz.   a gallon or so is 44w   THis 5.5 gal one
is 144W.   seems like 150 or so whould be about right for a 5 gal size,
and 5 gal would be enough to get most small parts in, but not 6 zyl
valve covers, heads etc.   Should be able to dunk a wheel carrier or such.

Wonder what it'd cost to get a transducer and a power supply?   Or to

does his have one transducer or multiple transducers?   If you could
find out the frequency and power ratings of his transducer(s) then you
could probably make one.   The dimensions of the tub could be important
too; to be at a harmonic dimension, to reflect waves or at a unharmonic
dimension to dissipate.

There was a place near where I used to work for a few years that
reportedly built huge transducers for the USN.   I'm guessing these may
have been the ones that the "save the whales " people got mad a the USN
over, because they supposedly damaged whales miles away.    I bet wunna
dem transducers could peel the crud offn yer parts!

Its true... you have to attend to learn the secrets.

Its buried deep the the engineering menu. I'd guess I'm one of the few
people that remember its still there!

Re: [MBZ] Question for Jaime about COMAND system in 2006 E320 CDI (and for others, too)

2018-12-17 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I was actually considering one of these before I found my W140 last
month... I think they're quite good cars. Electronics wise they're fine,
but like any complex modern cars you're best off investing in a OBD2 code
reader. And there are still lots of electronics to rely on compared to
cars 20 years older.

Dwight answered the COMAND question... since they're Becker units, theres
still service available for them.

Good luck!
Jaime

I can't answer for Jaime but I do know if I go way into my Command system
his name is there as one of the engineers who designed it.
My 2005 E320 just had to have Command system replaced # 167k miles. 300 or
so dollars, for the part plus, about 1 hour labor from my regular MB Indy. I
don't use the navigation so I have not updated the map disks.

[MBZ] Question for Jaime about COMAND system in 2006 E320 CDI (and for others, too)

2018-12-17 Thread Craig via Mercedes
So I have been looking at the 2006 E320 CDI shown at

https://albuquerque.craigslist.org/cto/d/super-clean-mercedes-turbo/6772652250.html

That looks to be a good example of that year and model, but I'm still
concerned about what I might be getting into with it.

How reliable are the electronics in this?

If something fails, how much would it cost to fix?

Would I need a computerized analysis system to find out what's wrong?

What Baumuster is it? W210? W211? W212? W220?

How susceptable is it to rust? (The area in North Carolina to which we
will go just got about a foot of snow ...)

I'm still trying to figure out what we really want, but this vehicle
looks like it would be one which holds its value for the resale market.

Or am I all washed up?

Something else I would add is that you really need to spend some time figuring
out how you want to lay out the blog if you’re going that route. Planning in
advance for the layout will save you a myriad of headaches down the road as you
add and make changes to the content.

It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate, but if you make an outline for
different subjects and content it will help a lot in the long run. I can’t
count the number of web sites I’ve set up and later torn down because the
layout sucked or there were so many changes made to accommodate the content as
it was added they’re a nightmare to navigate.

I think that generating content (photos and text) is the hard part. I host a
couple web sites on a Synology NAS. The Synology software makes this fairly
easy. I use a free web page (html) editor called KompoZer which makes many
things easy but the resulting code is not as compact as it should be. I also
maintain a church site on a remote host and use FileZilla to move files from my

Re: [MBZ] Question For Jaime And/Or Dan P

2018-12-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I think the first thing you have to determine is how elaborate and detailed you
want to get. Do you want to be able to post a lot of text with pictures, just
a bunch of pictures in chronological order with some notes or captions, etc.,
etc.?

If you want maximum control and have some technical ability and a place to host
it, WordPress is the way to go. It involves a fair amount of effort to set up,
but once that’s done it’s relatively easy to maintain.

Wix is a really nice free blogging platform that you can do with minimal effort
or get carried away. It’s especially nice because it’s optimized for mobile
viewing, which is the means by which a lot of people will be looking at your
content these days.

If you just want to post pictures in an album format with small amounts of text
Flikr works well.

I use web editing software for the blogs on my personal web site, so that’s not
really helpful, but it’s an option if you’re so inclined. A lot of web or HTML
editors for building web sites offer some sort of blog capability, however,
you’ve got to be familiar with the platform and have a moderately high level of
ability to use them.

On a related note, one of the best parts about working with these older cars is
a the provenance. At least I think it is. I do my best to document the
provenance of the cars I own when possible. Sure, some you just don’t get that
level of knowledge, but when possible, it’s really cool to learn the history
behind the car, and it's often a source of enjoyment for the previous
owners, too. And while my motivation is not for the monetary value, it tends to
add value to the car should you ever decide to sell it. Kudos for doing this,
I think it’s a really important responsibility for those of us who keep these
cars running.

Mine is extremely old-school. I have a site, hosted on an old Mac in my
basement.
My blog is just HTML 1 files that I hand-edit, very plain and easy to do.
Photos are
put on the site, and IMG tags used to insert them into the blog. Doing so now
is
second nature, and there's not that much to it. I've been doing mine since
2000.
It's not fancy, not going to win any awards. But it works on pretty much every
browser known to man, including the ones for blind people.

What I like about it is that it relies upon ZERO tools that are not under my
control.
It relies upon ZERO services that are not under my control, except for the
hosting
of the domain name. (Well, there's an SSH relay to a friendly site, but that's
because
of my piratic ISP that raised my ire, and not because this is necessary.) The
data is
hosted at home, where I know where it is. It cannot be lost if somebody goes
out
of business, suffers a catastrophic meltdown, and/or converts to ransomware.

Just make sure you have good backups of the system, especially your blog data.
I use Time Machine. Free, and easy.

Nice.

I’m at an obligatory holiday party tonight, I’ll be happy to offer some insight
into this in the morning.

Neat!

I have a blog on blogger curtsotherblog.blogspot.com which like so many is out
of date. I like that its on Google and syncs with my Google account so photos
from my phone are easily available. The interface has gotten better in recent
years and only occasionally goes bonkers and drives me crazy.

I often forget to take pictures. For instance today we tightened the driver's
side track on the ASV which is kind of a pig of a job. I was so busy just
getting it done I didn't take any pictures...

That sounds great!

My site runs wordpress, which is pretty easy to post entries in once you
get it going, but you do need some kind of service to host it. I can't say
I'm an expert on the topic, my site is pretty out of date (again!)

Good luck with the car... and i'm looking forward to reading about it!

Re: [MBZ] Question for Jaime and others w. MBUSA connections - or - How to get NLA parts demand onto the MB radar

2010-12-21 Thread Max Dillon
I think your best shot is sending the note to Tom Hanson and asking him about
such a demand list. I think that if you keep your continuing use of a
Mercedes-Benz at a level of attention with MB (for instance, getting the high
mileage badges, ordering parts at the dealer occasionally, maybe using the
dealer service department once in a while or more often if inclined), they have
a good idea of world-wide population for that model and can forecast parts
demand so that they can decide when and how much of a part to put back into
production.

Subject: [MBZ] Question for Jaime and others w. MBUSA connections - or - How to
get NLA parts demand onto the MB radar

The MB policy of actually supporting their classic community is brilliant, and
I
am willing to put my money (within reason) on it. As I posted before, I'm
becoming impatient with aftermarket parts of questionable provenance and will
pay a premium for OE quality.

A couple of times now I've gone to order something for my W115 and have been
told by the dealer that the part is NLA and we even checked with the Classic
Centre. Two parts that come to mind are the rear seat pads and the speaker
grill assembly (the one that always shrivels up) on later W114/5 dashboards.

Demand for some items like seat pads must be increasing after being close to
nil
for many years. When I did the interior in my W115 I got what World Uplholstery
said was their last set of rear pads, one of which was a NOS genuine part, the
other had served as their fitting model when they were testing the covers. A
friend is getting set to do his W115, and World confirmed that the pads are
NLA.
Same story from GAHH and Mercedes directly.

A while ago I happened upon a note from Tom Hansen at the Classic Centre that
the trim pieces for the R107 were once again available after being NLA for a
while.

So my question: if the part is NLA, but Mercedes-Benz is restarting
production
on certain items according to demand, how does one ensure that this demand is
actually registered with the company. Is there a way of getting onto a list or
something so that these parts become available? Or do I just send a note to Tom?

D.

PS: to the joy of W116 owners, it appears that those formerly NLA rear seat
pads
are once again available in the aftermarket (and a bargain!). Not sure how
they'll hold up over time, but better than crumbling vestiges of the original...
