the high side connection is located right behind the alternator.

Decided to get the AC in my 83 300D working. The compressor turns on
and runs continuously when the appropriate buttons on the dash are
pushed, but nothing in the system gets cold. the sight glass shows
movement of bubbles.
I figured the system was overfilled by someone.
My brother is a professional refrigerant repair guy. He works on these
ammonia systems in meat packing plants and stuff, but he had a manifold
set that fit the automotive fittings. (apparently they're all the same?)
My 300D had been previously converted to R134a, or at least someone put
the little add-a-can fitting on the suction line port (and where
exactly IS the pressure line port, we couldn't find it...) his gauge
set didn't fit the add-a-can fitting, so he proceeded to take it off,
assuming that whoever put it on left the original shrader valve in the
old R22 port. Well you know what they say about assuming things.
with about one thread to go the little aluminum add-a-can port flew off
at about a 45 degree angle, just missing the grille of the car, bouncing
off my brothers brand new garage door and ended up 5 feet behind the
rear bumper of the car. Of course now the refrigerant charge had
nothing to keep it from escaping. So it did. not really a big deal as
the globe can warm all it wants now that my AC works. Anyhow, the
problem was all the oil in the system spritzed all over the car. Not as
much as spewed all over the side of my brothers house, but still enough
to smear up the windshield.
I put a new schrader valve in and refilled the system with those
add-a-can things (as brother only has ammonia and R304 or something
crazy like that)
it's not super cold, and probably not enough to keep up on a 90 degree
day with the car idling, but at speed it does a good enough job.
just thought i'd share that with you in case the effects of refrigerant
exposure are delayed a few hours, in which case my wife can have the
300D, the powerbook, and my big green chair.
