I don’t think there is a good alternative for a W124, depending on what you’re looking for in the way of a car. If you want a Toyota Camry as far as reliability, a solid W210 is the best way to go. They’re still fairly simple to work on and maintain, and very durable and reliable. Not as solid as a W124, but good cars nonetheless. You can buy multiple feet and bolt them to any sort of crossmember you want. Two feet per end on a 2x8 works for heavy stuff. Usually I am not hauling anything that heavy on the car.
