Re: [MBZ] Rust and Solvent-like smell in Fuel Filler
That happens when you get water in the tank. You are probably going to have to pull the tank and clean it out. The inline and main fuel filter should trap it before it does much harm (be ready to change them if they plug up) and the use of a fuel system cleaner or a tank or two of BioDiesel-20 should clean things out (but you may need several filter replacements). Alway use a fuel deicer/anti-gel agent at least once a year (late fall) to remove accumulated water and when temp drops in excess of 20-25 degrees are anticipated, fill the tank to minimize the amount of condensate that will form (when the temp drops below the dew point of the air in the tank). Re: [MBZ] Rust and Solvent-like smell in Fuel Filler
If the car hasn't been run for a while, it may have leftover winter blend of unleaded and diesel still in the tank, which would be going bad if it's sat since winter and would smell like varnish., or it may have had real old funky diesel in it and they stuck some gas in there to give it a little kick to get it to fire. -Robert Zoltan Finks wrote: > I have been grappling with whether to ask this or not, since I may not > like the answer, whatever it may be: > > The 190D we recently bought actually has rust in and on the fuel > filler tube and on the inside of the cap. [MBZ] Rust and Solvent-like smell in Fuel Filler
I have been grappling with whether to ask this or not, since I may not like the answer, whatever it may be: The 190D we recently bought actually has rust in and on the fuel filler tube and on the inside of the cap. In addition, I noticed when I put my nose down there (the first time I added fuel to the thing) that there is a sort of solvent-like smell, even gasoline-like. This is pretty peculiar to me, and my thoughts of course immediately jumped to what the seller might have done to, say, temporarily make the car run well (like putting in some sort of additive). Does diesel purge smell like this? And have any of you with a similar model had rust in these places? Wierd!
