[MBZ] SL500

2022-05-28 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Sold the SL500 today to an Armenian guy I was sure was a flipper. Turns out he
was buying it for his kid.

He beat on me relentlessly to try and get me down, but I walked away on him. A
couple of minutes later he came back and gave me my price.

I felt like I had just finished my first day of Marine boot camp when I was
done. This guy was relentless.

I ended up driving the car across Tampa to his house. I bit of an
inconvenience, but allowed us to stop for dinner at a favorite German
restaurant.

That and the pipe had to come out. There was no possible way they could have
gotten all the way around the cat to weld the seam with it in frame.

I’m still ahead of the game as far as I’m concerned. As much as I don’t care
for that car, it’s been one of the most trouble free MBs I’ve ever owned.

A number of years ago now, I had an 86 Chevy Suburban. The exhaust pipe
would crack on the Y pipe where the 2 parts joined  and I would drop
into the local Minute Muffler shop. They would put it on the hoist and
weld it in place and charge me $8.
It would last a year or two and then I would get them to do it again. A
bargain then and now.

SL500 has gotten worse. I was planning on taking the pipe off this weekend and
heading over to the local muffler shop to have it welded, but it’s gotten too
loud to be drivable for the spouse.

Dropped it off this morning at the shop. Waiting for them to open and give me

I’m hoping the can just drop the pipe and weld it up. The replacement is like

We put a hitch on the X5, for a bike rack. Just the mechanical part, the
electrical part was NLA, and the aftermarket Scotch-lock things are an
abomination. Did see one used kit for sale, $600 for the whole banana.
But we already have a sufficiently usable mechanical portion, so too rich
for my blood. Yes, the onboard computers sense the presence of the trailer
plug, and apparently modify the programming of the car in some way, besides
converting the light signals. Good luck getting actual details on that.
We did use the X5 to tow a float trailer in a parade, figured we could do
without the lights for that rather than cough up $600...

er that I wonder what the plan will be -- find a nasty
Bluetec that has been abused and park it out back? Or a wreck for an
engine/trans/electronics/etc.? I'm not seeing buying another newer vehicle at
that point but who knows. I'll keep my old trucks and Benzes running, I guess
Mama will have to decide what she wants to do with her ride.

My brother did the smartest thing he could and got the best advice from a

"never buy these cars unless you have very deep pockets." The Active Body
Control suspension is a beast to fix. The pump is $3,500 and each wheel is $2,000!

Re: [MBZ] SL500?

2016-08-11 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
When Poos bought my buddy's S430 he made mention of the air suspension
so I looked at some of the aftermarket/reman parts and they weren't that
pricey (in the $100s not $1000s as below) so I thought that was not
*too* bad given it would be a newer car, etc. And those are getting to
where there will be some at the knackers.

But the issue that concerns me about all the new cars, not just Benzes
(maybe more so for Benzes as getting hold of knacker parts might be
harder as time goes on given lower sales volumes) is all the
electronics. I'm sure that not only is there a mechanical system
(air/hyd pumps and pistons and valves and solenoids and such) but some
computer(s) somewhere that is running the whole thing. So maybe the
Kleb approach would be best -- buy 2 or 3 of the beasts from the
auctions and have a source of bits to keep things running.

On the ML we bought the 6yr/100kmi ext warranty, which will probably
last another 3 or 4 years, after that I wonder what the plan will be --
find a nasty Bluetec that has been abused and park it out back? Or a
wreck for an engine/trans/electronics/etc.? I'm not seeing buying
another newer vehicle at that point but who knows. I'll keep my old
trucks and Benzes running, I guess Mama will have to decide what she
wants to do with her ride.

2016-08-11 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
A buddy of mine has one that is maybe newer 2010, 2011? Same basic car
I guess. The main thing about all the newer Benzes is the electronics,
if all the computers and actuators and bits crap out you're looking at
big dineros. Low mileage though, he might want to enquire on an
extended warranty, the one on the ML goes to 100kmi and was not that
expensive. I think it would be maybe 10% of the total cost on the car,
probably a reasonable expenditure.

That is possible Derail, whowever, they were grey market cars. There was
no US version 500SL in the 107 body.

Derails only existence on these lists is to stir up trouble and forward
information off the list to another list.

I'm with Kaleb on this one - per John Olson's book The SL Experience,
The 500SL (as well as the 280SL, 300SL, and 420SL) was never officially
imported to the US. The 560SL was a US-only model. The only 107 SLs
imported to the US through official channels were the 350 (4.5L), 380,
450, and 560.

There was nothing truly special about the 500SL as it was the about
the 500SLC and 450SLC 5.0, both of which were rally homologation cars.

[MBZ] SL500 for sale -- value?

2006-09-16 Thread LT Don

1979 SL500, 150,000 miles. Interior is really good. No rust, dings, dents,
etc. Guy is asking $6500.

What's the true value?

(Not for me, Debbie's brother is interested.)

I won't say where it is, by the way, least Kleb head north w/ a trailer.

Re: [MBZ] SL500 for sale -- value?

Don,

For that year it would be a 500SL, 107 body

Here's a link to OurSL.com http://www.oursl.com/listings.php?
op=showadsmodelid=12For some newer, but still 500SL's, same 107
body style.

No connection/affiliation/etc A true value and good price
are all in the eyes and pocketbook of the buyer and seller.

Take care,

Yes, realized my error a few minutes after sending. In fact, Performance
Products catalog suggests that it would actually be a 450 rather than a 500,
but I am far from an SL expert.

The 500SL in '79 would be a Euro model. I know they made 500SLC's -
for racing. I don't know if the 500SL is a standard Euro car or rare.
There aren't very many 500SLCs, and the do go for a fair amount of
money.

IIRC the factory euro 500SL did not appear until the early 80s; and imported
in small numbers by MBNA.

At the time, both gray-market and MBNA 500SLs were running around.

You'd have to check the vin # to know what model, of course
