I didn't have any real issue talking on a phone before hands free became
common. The bigger problem is texting. That pretty much requires that
one focus on the device rather than the road.

It is getting expensive around here if one is caught using the phone
without hands free. The fine is now $672 and I think 2 demerit points.

Onroad anyway. Offroad in really deep snow flotation is your friend. If we'd

The first snow was quite amusing if you went through about 8 am.  There
would be maybe 10-30 (2 WD) cars in the ditches before "SUVs" became
popular.

When the majority of vehicles were high center of gravity 4WD "SUVs" a
few years later, 25=50% of the vehicles were on the side or rolled
over;  and with even a slight snow, there would be 50-100 in the
ditches, sometimes so many that anyone sliding off was likely to hit one
or more in the ditch.  Most of these people drove the same road to work
every day, but never learned.

4wd has no more contact patches (between the tar and the road) than
2wd.  In face, the 4wd usually has bigger/wider tires with not much
change in vehicle weight, resulting in less lb/sq in pressure on those 4
small contact patches.  Even though there is more surface area, the
lighter pressure makes it easier to slide.  Think about it.  does an
ice skater use snowshoes or a blade to make the contact with the ice
surface?  could they gain more control with more contact area?

In fact the reverse is true: the slicker it gets, the smaller and
narrower the tire should be.  This principle goes for ice and snow
both.  You DON'T want to "float" on snow while driving.

The loose nut behind the wheel thinks "I have 4WD, I don't have to slow
down on the snow/ice?  When they slide into the ditch at high speed,
the high center of gravity of their "invincible SUV" results in
rollovers where my SDL, had I been as stupid, would have stayed upright.

If you went though about 7:30 am, it was downright scary with idiots
sliding off all around you and going in the ditch.  They'd go flying by
, then loose it and slide left or right, bashing anything in the way

2018-11-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
That reminds me, a few winters ago I was driving in a snowstorm. It wasn't
that bad out, the roads were salted well, I was driving the pickup but in 2wd.
In front of me at a stoplight was a Honda SUV, as we pulled away from the light
she accelerated hard and then when the road turned slightly to the right she
veered right off the right side of the road. At first I thought she'd slid but
on later reflection I realized she must have been looking at her phone or
something as she didn't slow down or try to steer out of it.
I stopped to help and of course it was all my fault that she had driven off the
road, she claimed it was "so slippery she couldn't stay on the road at all" and
somehow my big truck being behind her had made it worse.
She'd gotten it so far into the ditch she couldn't drive it out and I couldn't
see anywhere on it to hook on a strap. She "called her husband" and he was "on
his way" so I took off and left her there...

I don't think Floyd is saying 4WD is bad - just that the it seems
a lot of people seem to think. "The car has 4WD, so I don't have
to slow down, or drive more carefully just because there is snow.
The 4WD will means I can go anywhere at any speed!"

I find it interesting that during a recent snow here I had to
drive in it - and I saw about 6 vehicles in the ditch - 5 were
four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive.  Since I _know_ the
mechanicals improve the performance is those conditions, it sure
suggests its the loose nut behind the wheel that is the source of
the problem.

They've lowered the CG a couple inches in most of them.

The drivers are WORSE now. Sitting behind the wheel is time to shave,
apply makeup paste, text, read books or newspapers, kindles etc etc. it
is not considered important to drive. Let the nanny do that. I don't
have to slow down in snow, "My SUV is invincible."

I look at what other drivers are doing on the interstate. It gets more
scary each trip. Probably 50% now are not driving. YMMV, and I'd guess
in the big cities it is worse.

One of the worst distracted drivers I have seen was a "Professional" who
just got on the interstate from his company yard, a major flatbed
hauler. THis guy was all over 2 lanes and the shoulder in a congested
area. I guessed he was chasing a puppy all over the cab in place of
driving. he would go on the shoulder, to the left lane, back to the
shoulder, repeat, repeat. I called the company and reported him to the

would be maybe 10-30 (2 WD) cars in the ditches before "SUVs" became

I don't think Floyd is saying 4WD is bad - just that the it seems
a lot of people seem to think. "The car has 4WD, so I don't have
to slow down, or drive more carefully just because there is snow.
The 4WD will means I can go anywhere at any speed!"

I find it interesting that during a recent snow here I had to
drive in it - and I saw about 6 vehicles in the ditch - 5 were
four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. Since I _know_ the

suggests its the loose nut behind the wheel that is the source of

We used to get our fair share ( or more, depending on your point of view)
of snow and ice here in OK, but it's been years now since we had enough to
get excited about. I learned to drive from my father, who grew up in MN.
Snow and ice was part of the curriculum. I taught our kids to drive in OK,
but always took the snow/ice opportunities to teach them. Our youngest had
my driving course, then wen to grad school at MI Tech where there are
steeped hills than we have around here (Houghton, MI) along with LOTS of
snow. He took the opportunity to take a snow/ice driving course through the
school where he mostly got more experience sliding in a controlled
environment, and learned the value of proper snow tires.

Re: [MBZ] SNOW!

2018-11-26 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes

At camp a couple weeks ago they forecast 6" of snow, we got a solid 8", made
the camp road "interesting", this is outbound, about halfway to the main road.
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4886/32089597238_2fab11df2e_b.jpg

https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4808/32089597268_65332422cd_b.jpg

This is most of the way out, if you look careful the road goes down another 150
yards or so and turns right. The picture is from the top of a small hill. About
halfway to the turn Eric stuck his Chebby pickup. We usually tease him for
driving too fast in the woods, well this time he was driving too slow. The snow
had drifted about 18" and as he wasn't carrying any speed he couldn't make it.
I yanked him out with the Dodge. I've got more aggressive tires (General
Grabber AT II) and a little more clearance. It was hard getting him out though.

This is the first time in the 30 years I've been going to camp we had this much
snow, it was cold too, the night after the snow it got down to 4F.
We actually plowed out the dooryard:

https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4900/31126051907_8ff6aa9e36_b.jpg

That old 7hp Cub Cadet did the job but just barely, if the snow had been wet or
there had been any more it wouldn't have made it. I need to rig a weight box
for it...

They were predicting another 5 inches of snow on Thursday night so Thursday
morning we skedaddled. It just started snowing as I got home...

No, it's not the nannies - they couldn't drive before the electronics in
cars, and never learned then either.

The big issue is all the electronic nannies that do the thinking for you. Folks

We had the coldest Thanksgiving on record, and then on Saturday another 2"
of rain which brings the D.C. yearly total to 60", or 20" above normal.
Another 1/3" and we will have shattered the all time record for
precipitation. All this rain is NOT good for the Chesapeake Bay
oysters... They are also forecasting a snowy winter here, and if current
patterns prevail I believe it.

I grabbed the binders thinking "Yeah right, we're going to slide right into

She wasn't hurt but the trunk and bumper on her car were all stove in and

the police showed up, meanwhile a plow truck came by.
Didn't help though, trying to climb into Troy we got behind a Durango that
was having a helluva time making the hill. Troy is tough, you climb a big
hill, go back down and then climb again. I actually pulled off halfway up
the hill, the vehicle behind us had no concept of safe following distance
and I didn't fancy being a sandwich. I let them get well ahead before I
tried again and about 3/4 of the way up the hill even we were having a
challenging time, I kept the Golf in 3rd at about 1600 rpm, enough power to
move the car but not really any for spinning, I was keeping out of the
turbo, trying to drive it like a 240D.
The south side of Troy we got into deeper snow, an inch or maybe two but it
was really windy and the wind was making snow devils that made it hard to
see. We forged on though and made it safely. The ride north took us 30mins,
south was 90. Angie knows its bad out when I drive with both hands...

I measured 18" at 1:30 when it was snowing steadily but not heavily. After
I came inside, abloizzard conditions adding another several inches - and
it's still snowing hard at 5:30PM. NYC was supposed to receive "only" 12",
but they've been upgraded to 20" +, about the same as the DC area. It also
appears that the storm will not spare Boston, as originally forecast. Not
sure what their totals will be.

On a lighter note, has anyone seen the cat-certo video?

I saw some flakes blowing around this morning but not much of anything,
Max who lives a bit north of me said it was melting when it hit the
ground, I guess it was a bit colder there. Upstate got an inch or two,
as did between there and Atlanta.

My niece lives in DC area, looks like they had a foot or so, and her
brother lives in Richmond, VA, looks like they got maybe 6-8in.

In NC Piedmont (near Henderson NC) we were on the edge of the storm, which
has now past. Friday, we got some snow followed by sleet and freezing rain,
probably 2-3 inches of dense crystalline stuff. Earlier today we probably
got another 1-2 inches of actual snow. Roads are passible but dangerous and
none plowed out here in the sticks. Well above freezing forecast Sun and
Mon so I expect roads will clear without plowing. Brother in west NJ
reports 3 ft of light stuff and still falling. Sister in south NJ reports 2
ft of wet heavy stuff.

We've got to be over 20" now west of Morristown, NJ... I haven't gone out
to measure yet. But its up to the bumper on my suburban, and the C and S
class in the driveway have disappeared.

I made two runs over the drive way with the kubota so far, and planning for
the last in the morning probably.

We're in the NWS's 24-30" zone, with 30-36 just south of here, so its
certainly not over yet!

Re: [MBZ] Snow comes to New Mexico

2015-12-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I'm a little confused by this.

I can see the eastern and northern parts of the state being affected by winter
weather, as they're somewhat mountainous. However, as I recall from a couple
of visits, Albuquerque is just high desert if that, with the mountains being
nearby.

Are you saying that they had that kind of snowfall in Albuquerque?

No, as our Governor said, "Someone may look at the winter in Albuquerque
or Santa Fe and say, ‘It doesn’t seem that bad ...'"

Albuquerque has not had that kind of snow. Look at http://nmroads.com/ --
the roads that are in red are the areas that got dumped on with snow.

Contrary to what seems reasonable, the lower areas got hit, because
that's where the storm was most intense. The snow, even here in
Albuquerque, was coming from the south because the low pressure area was
near the southwest corner of New Mexico and the counter-clockwise
rotation of the air pumped moisture from Mexico and the Pacific ocean
into the state.

Does that make more sense?

[MBZ] Snow comes to New Mexico

2015-12-27 Thread Craig via Mercedes
Things here in Albuquerque are pretty much shut down because of the snow
overnight. A local TV station's website says,

The winter storm has caused treacherous driving conditions across
the state. 178 accidents have been reported in Albuquerque. APD
is asking everyone to stay off the roads.

Interstate 40 is closed from Eubank all the way to the Texas
state line.

I-25 is closed at the Paseo del Norte flyover due to icy
conditions.

Police are asking drivers to exchange insurance information and
report minor accidents on Monday. A police officer will be sent
to all accidents where someone is injured.

Are those in Oklahoma seeing winter conditions as forecasted?

There is more coming, as this story from 0802 this morning says:

A civil emergency was declared Sunday morning as high winds and
blowing snow led to dangerous and life-threatening conditions in
eastern New Mexico, officials said.

Snow drifts of 6 to 10 feet and low visibility were reported in
Roosevelt and Quay counties. Wind gusts of up to 60 mph and
negative wind chills created hazardous travel conditions,
officials said.

Several motorists were stranded, and drivers were urged to stay
off the roads.

Drove from Conway, AR to Springdale in pouring rain, but no snow.

Helpful hint of the day: A couple quarts of Windex in your washer fluid
does a great job of cutting the oily spray one gets from a wet Interstate.

Nuther helpful A half cup of ammonia in a quart of water is a
whole lot cheaper and just as effective. If you can't live without
the blue, add blue food color to taste.

No self respecting baker will pay for windex to clean the bakery cases.

Good idea. But it's prone to freeze. I usually put some

anti-freeze when it gets cold.

2015-12-27 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
High 70s here in the Lowcountry, I am not complaining except that the
skeeters have not looked at the calendar to see that it is winter.

We got hammered some years ago driving from Houston to Keystone, CO,
roads were closed up in NE NM, we found some other route that was back
roads, fairly nasty but made it OK. There had been a big snowstorm in
Denver, we got there just after it quit and getting through there was
slow-going as the roads had not really been cleared but we made it
through that. On the way back all the roads east of Denver were closed
due to a big storm and forecast huge snow, we went south then tried to
go east but all those roads were closed too. Stayed 2 nights in Pueblo,
all south and east was closed for the duration (22ft drifts in places)
so we headed back to Denver then east, road was pretty bad but open,
then south. Long trip home, I think I drove 26 hr straight.

Y'all have fun, I won't laugh at you because that might mean our 76F
turns into snow!

I've been using RainX orange and wonder about the wax on the windshield.
It also puts wax on the hood where the washer nozzles dribble, leaving a
