Body work of a minor nature can total this car.  Two years ago I had an idiot 
back his trailer into mine.  Sideswiped both doors and the rear quarter panel.  
Shop needed $5.5k to make it good with new parts.  The bumper covers and front 
quarter panel were not involved.  Minor gouge, not massive damage.  Door skins 
cost more than doors.  If this car is really all that loaded, one slow speed 
bumper booboo would total the car.  Sensors in there run big, stupid dollars to 
make right.

I saw a 2005 E55 a few months ago with a salvage title that needed a front 
bumper skin, front right fender and a couple of right side door skins.  The 
doors could probably been beaten out nicely, but the fender and front bumper 
were definitely in need of replacement.

The car was fully loaded - heated/cooled/massaging seats, dual AC, under 100k 
miles, full service records, one owner, and it might have even had a Designo 
interior, if I recall.

Price was $6500 and the car was completely drivable.

Parts alone to repair the car were almost as much.  And this is a car that 
would probably be worth $12k-$15k without the damage.

The local club did an event at the body shop across from the dealer.  That 
afternoon was an huge eye opener.  There were a number of benz in the shop with 
"total" tags.  A 2009 S class which bumped the front into the garage wall.  
Only messed up the bumper and grill.  And the sensors.  The foam would be 
simple, as was the cover.  The sensors needed all manner of computer boogery, 
replacing with new sensor, and highway robbery shop time.

Anther was an AMG S that some idiot smashed the passenger window to steal a 
phone.  Glass scratched the leather seats, console, dash.  The door seal and 
window trim were messed up.   Cost of those parts was stupid high, some 
specialized Black Forest elf foreskin alloy for the trim.  Whole new console, 
seats and dash required because they do not fix.  $129k car with "cosmetic" 
damage totaled by a busted window.

Frame Alignment rig was another interesting tool.  The thing is laser trued and 
micron tolerances.  The standard car rig had cm level slop.
