Re: [MBZ] Several Barn Finds in NJ

2015-05-30 Thread LarryT via Mercedes
you might want to tell the sellers there is no such thing as a 1958
MG-TD. It is definitely a TD, but in 1958 MG was selling MGA's. The TD
started around 1950 and ended around 1954 - I say around because there
were no hard rules for determining the model year of a vehicle. My 66
MGB was built in 66 but was registered as a 67 because that's when it
left the dealers lot. Things were standardized in 1968.

Anyway tell them I'll help with their MG research if needed.

No fair showing us a green Benz with a perfect white steering wheel and a SOLD
sign on it.

A quick look at the VIN on the Lancia will tell you if it's a 1981 or 1982 or
earlier. Isn't there an emissions label under the hood?

I don't think that MG-TD is a 1958.

Re: [MBZ] Several Barn Finds in NJ

2015-05-22 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I managed to get the 1966 230 started today with an external fuel tank. It
was a little reluctant at first, but once the fuel was flowing through the
carbs it idled pretty well. It pulled out under its own power and was
lined up with the rest of the cars. It didn't smoke or knock, generally
gave a good impression. Its a good car... rusty on the floors, but a lot
of positive points that make it worth saving. Someone who wants to do some
metal work would have a nice project.

The 220Sb turns by hand and with the starter, but I couldn't get any fuel
to flow through the carbs. I'm sure they're just gummed up. It did run on
ether, however, a few seconds at a time. The clutch hydraulics were gone,
so getting it running didn't really help with moving it around tight
corners anyway. The Becker tube radio worked too, after it warmed up of
course.

The 1966 250S wasn't going to start... someone had removed the plugs and I
couldn't get it turned by hand, so I didn't try any further.

To me both the 110 and the 111 are worth saving.

Both have disc front brakes. 63 is the first year for front disc brakes
on all MBs. In 1968, when the US goobermnt made US companies put front
disc brakes on cars, MB went to 4 wheel disk on all cars. Some cars like
the SLs had disc brakes earlier. These dates are for 110 and 111. I am
not sure about 112. It may have had disc brakes earlier, but 1963 and 1968
are the dates for ALL cars in the fleet to have disc brakes.

Just the pictures are mixed up... the main photos are swapped. The other
photos for the cars are correct. No swapping of parts.

The 230 actually looks great, except for the terrible rust and repair

 certainly worth saving.

Given how easily it started and well it ran, I haven't concerns about the
engine. It didn't show any blow by at idle, so it's likely an issue of
messy breather hoses.

There were plenty of high mileage cars there... I don't suspect any reason
it's not an honest car.

Re: [MBZ] Several Barn Finds in NJ

2015-05-21 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
No fair showing us a green Benz with a perfect white steering wheel and a SOLD
sign on it.

A quick look at the VIN on the Lancia will tell you if it's a 1981 or 1982 or
earlier. Isn't there an emissions label under the hood?

I don't think that MG-TD is a 1958.

Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] Several Barn Finds in NJ

2015-05-21 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
What is the chassis number on the 230? Picture shows the
taillights of a 111, but it looks like the front end may be single
headlights. No good pictures of the outside. Doors have pockets
like an S (111) but by 1966, even the 110s had door pockets. I can't
see enough of the dash or windshield surround to determine it it has
wood or plastic.

It shows an 111 bumper on the rear, and a 110 bumper on the front.

110 hit on the rear, and a 111 rear end grafted on? Mixup with the pictures?

Hi Guys,
I've been helping a guy up here in NJ who was hired to liquidate an estate
that includes several Mercedes. A W110, W111, and a bunch of W126s. The
best of the bunch is a 85 300SD with 121,000 miles. They've all been
sitting for several years and will need some significant cleaning and
maintenance. Some are better as parts cars.

Details are here:

Its best to use the contacts on the site if you're interested in any cars,
but I can answer questions about them since I've laid hands and eyes on
them, and even got a few started.

Jaime
