Pex-Al-Pex is what the air line kit I bought uses. I think the fittings were special. I don't think that something that can explode and send srapnel in the shop is a place to save mmoney, though I did shop for the least expensive solution. Re: [MBZ] Shop air lines
I just did some cursory searching, and the general consensus seems to be that while you can use PEX for air lines, it’s not considered ideal for a number of reasons, most of which seem to focus on permeability and burst pressure. What many of the articles do suggest, however, is to consider using PEX-AL-PEX, which is PEX with an internal aluminum core. It doesn’t appear to be all that expensive, but I didn’t look to see if it requires special fittings or can use standard PEX fittings. 300’ of 12” PEX-AL-PEX looks to be around $140, which doesn’t seem that expensive compared to other materials, like copper or iron pipe. -D > On Nov 24, 2023, at 6:27 PM, Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes > wrote: > > Yea I think you are right, it will be much cheaper using regular pex fittings > and buying the crimp tool and rings off amazon. > > On 11/24/2023 12:55 PM, dan penoff.com via Mercedes wrote: >> I would tend to believe it would be cost-prohibitive as well to use >> SharkBite fittings. Re: [MBZ] Shop air lines
Regardless of pipe size, ALWAYS install a shut off ball valve inline coming OUT of the compressor tank, and ALWAYS close that valve, along with opening the main off switch to your compressor. Every time you leave the shop for longer than to take lunch. Air leak = air compressor running = continuous running = compressor failure or motor overheat = shop fire or great expense. Plus, being able to close pressure to all airlines lets you repair or reconfigure at any time desired. I wonder about PEX? It is more flexible and less brittle than PVC or ABS. Is PVC Pipe Alright to Use with Compressed Air? PUBLISHED ON May 1, 2019 by Brian Farno A question arises every now and then on whether or not PVC pipe, yes the stuff from your local hardware store that says it is rated for 200 psi, is safe to use as compressed air supply line. The answer is always the same, NO! OSHA agrees – see their statement here. Schedule 40 PVC pipe is not designed nor rated for use with compressed air or other gases. PVC pipe will explode under pressure, it is impacted significantly by temperature and can be difficult to get airtight. PVC pipe was originally designed and tested for conveyance of liquids or products that cannot be compressed, rather they can be pressurized. The largest concern is the failure method of the piping itself. When being used with a liquid that cannot be compressed, if there is a failure (crack or hole) then the piping will spring a leak and not shatter. When introducing a compressed gas, such as compressed air, if there is a failure the method ends up being shrapnel. This YouTube video does a good job of illustrating how the pipe shatters. While it may seem that it takes a good amount of pressure to cause a failure in the pipe, that is often not the case. I have chatted with some local shop owners who decided to run PVC as a quick and cheap alternative to get their machines up and running. They each experienced the same failures at different points in time as well. The worst one was a section of PVC pipe installed over a workbench failed where an operator would normally be standing. Luckily the failure happened at night when no one was there. Even though no one got injured this still caused a considerable expense to the company because the compressor ran overnight trying to pressurize a ruptured line. Temperature will impact the PVC as well. Schedule 40 PVC is generally rated for use between 70°F and 140°F (21°-60°C). Pipes that are installed outside or in non temperature controlled buildings can freeze the pipes and make them brittle. If you haven’t worked with PVC before or do not let the sealant set, it can be hard to get a good seal, leading to leaks and a weak spot in the system. The point of this is the cheapest, quick, and easy solutions are more often , the ones that will cost the most in the long run. I would say that the flexible hose is very easy to install. I replaced the PVC because it is rated for water pressure, not compressed air and it was not routed where I wanted it. I have a shutoff valve right at the compressor and shut it off when I don't need the air. There are still a leaks somewhere - it will drop 15 PSI over 24 hours and I don't want the compressor running when I'm not using the air. Re: [MBZ] Shop air
I've done 3 shops now using schedule 40 PVC pipe, with drain valves below each quick disconnect on a 24 inch stub, and have had zero issues with it. No rust issues with PVC pipe and use the drain valves to blow down the system frequently which keeps water condensate out of the air tools. I also plumbed in a main system shutoff ball valve right at the compressor, and made it part of the daily drill to shut off the compressor circuit breaker and close the ball valve. I do this because I'm often gone for days at a time and I don't want the compressor to run continuously should anything happen with the air system while I'm away. The systems in the first two shops are now owned by new owners, and they are still working with no issues. Compressor working pressure is set at 160 PSI and schedule 40 is rated for burst pressure of 400 PSI for 3/4 PVC pipe. https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/pvc-cpvc-pipes-pressures-d_796.html Just follow the assembly protocol for gluing all the joints and fittings and use plenty of mount clamps so it doesn't sag on long runs and you should be up and running for a long time to come. Tip, always use a mount clamp at each quick disconnect to reduce strain when you yank on the hose from 30 ft away. You could cheap out and use PEX and black iron or copper. You will have to invest in the tools for PEX tubing though. https://youtu.be/40kHcnGjw78 This young fellow used copper. I think 1/2" OD would be pretty constricting for any high-volume applications such as large impact wrenches or painting. That's probably 3/8" ID at best, likely less. Look at the highest CFM requirements of the tools you would be using and see what diameter piping you need given the length of the tube/pipe run between your compressor and the work location.
